Duties and Responsibilities Background: In 2018, the United Nations (UN) launched a system-wide workplace mental health and well-being strategy – called “A Healthy Workforce for a Better World” (for more information please refer to: https://hr.un.org/sites/hr.un.org/files/Mental%20Health%20Well%20Being%20Strategy_FINAL_2018_ENGLISH_0.pdf). The purpose of the strategy is to increase the effectiveness of the UN by optimising the psychological health of its personnel, under four strategic themes:

1. To create a workplace that enhances mental and physical health and well-being; 2. To develop, deliver and continuously evaluate mental health and well-being services in all duty stations; 3. To welcome and support staff who live with mental health challenges; and 4. To ensure sustainable funding for mental health and well-being services.

The UN Secretariat established a Mental Health Leadership team in September 2020 to implement the strategy within the Secretariat. The first phase of this project was to develop a tailored Mental Health Action Plan and implement initial actions. Initial actions have now been undertaken and the next phase involves reviewing progress and implementing an action plan for 2023.

The next phase of the project will focus on: - Implementation of relevant actions within all UN Secretariat Entities. - Making and implementing recommendations related to identified mental health and well-being related administrative/policy issues, including sick leave, reasonable accommodations/return to work, and creating a healthy working environment - Ensuring equal access to quality psycho-social support – through mapping of current services, managing international employee assistance programme and reviewing insurance provisions - Rolling out educational resources for leaders and managers, HR professionals and all UN personnel

The Project Manager is now required to work with the Leadership Team, the Global Lead for the UN System Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy and other stakeholders to oversee the implementation of the 2023 Action Plan and lead projects related to the plan.

The duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager are to:

  • Act as key point of contact with members of the UN Secretariat Mental Health Leadership Team
  • Co-ordinate meetings of the Secretariat Mental Health Leadership Team
  • Lead activities and Projects related to the Implementation of the UN System Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy within the Secretariat as directed by the Leadership Team
  • Convene and Chair relevant working groups and ensure agreed deliverables are achieved
  • Report on progress of relevant activities
  • Work with the Global Lead for the UN System Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy to ensure system-wide actions are implemented with the UN Secretariat
  • Work with the Global Lead for the UN System Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy to pilot projects within the UN Secretariat

    Qualifications/special skills Master’s degree in Public Health, Business Administration, Human Resources, Mental Health or related area is required. A minimum of 7 years of experience in managing projects/programmes and working on workplace and/or population psychosocial and mental health issues is required. Experience managing multiple stakeholders in a complex environment is required. Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience in implementing system change/improvement program is desirable. Experience in the multilateral sector and/or Peacekeeping, Humanitarian Relief/ Development is desirable. Experience in Human Resources is desirable

    Languages Fluency in English is required.
