Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Engineering Section of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in Tombouctou. The Water and Sanitation Technician reports to Regional Chief Engineer.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Water and Sanitation Technician will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Water and Sanitation Technicians.)

  • Manages contractors and military engineering unit supervise assigned staff.
  • Locates viable water sources and abstraction points including surface (river, lake, steams) and ground water sources (wells, boreholes, infiltration galleries).
  • Supervises drilling of wells and boreholes and construction of surface water intakes.
  • Plans scheduled maintenance on all the installations and equipment related to water supply, sanitation and treatment systems.
  • Oversees emergency works and repairs of various water supply, sanitation and treatment systems.
  • Prepares and analyzes the reports related to the performance of water equipment in the field including boreholes, pumps, main supply, storage tanks and distribution networks.
  • Monitors, records and archives reports pertaining to inspection, service and repair of purification / water treatment plants and all other water related equipment.
  • Monitors and ensures adequate stock levels of spare parts for water supply and sewerage works and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment, and provides lists of periodic requirement of same well in advance for the purpose of raising requisitions.
  • Consolidates and reviews daily chemical and bacteriological analysis of water and treated wastewater effluent and recommend improvements.
  • Assists in preparation of scope of works for water and waste water systems by providing field based input.
  • Assists in preparation of technical evaluations.
  • Approves work orders and initiates requisitions as and when required.
  • Coordinates works as necessary with engineering counterparts in specialized technical areas.
  • Provides guidance and practical hands-on training to staff working under his/her supervision.
  • May act as a head of the Unit.
  • Performs other duties as and when required including emergency call-out and standby duties.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following: Chief/Supervisors of other Units, staff of the Section. Local and international contractors including the contractor’s technical personnel. Civilian and Military UN personnel throughout the Mission.

Results Expected: Effective management and supervision of engineering projects related to water and sanitation, and their preventive maintenance programme. Tradesmen and staff under direct supervision are well guided and able to efficiently perform work assigned. Water, sanitation, well construction and maintenance projects progress in accordance with planned schedules. Site safety procedures are known to personnel for the performance of their assigned duties.

Education High school diploma or equivalent. Technical or vocational certificate in Water Resources, Water sample analysis, installation, operation and maintenance of water equipment is required.

Work Experience At least ten years of relevant experience in the field of Water and Sanitation. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five years for candidates who possess a first level university degree.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
