This Over 17.8 million people lack access to basic WASH services in Yemen, putting them at heightened risk of waterborne diseases, malnutrition, and other life-threatening conditions. It is estimated that some 29 per cent of people internally displaced due to the prolonged internal conflict in Yemen do not have access to safe drinking water, and 47 per cent do not have sanitation facilities. As such, UNICEF is investing huge resources with support from its donors towards ensuring sustainable access to at least basic WASH services by vulnerable women and children living in IDPs and host communities in both urban and rural areas.

The task at hand demands highly skilled and experienced human resources capacity to ensure timely and quality WASH programming. capacity building. This UNV assignment will contribute to UNICEF’s objective of increasing sustainable access to WASH services in Yemen and will help UNICEF make meaningful contributions towards achieving WASH goals, targets and indicators stipulated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework.

The overall purpose of this position is to contribute to the successful planning and implementation of humanitarian and development WASH activities, contributing towards the growing need for effective grant management, information management, documentation, and knowledge management at the country office, and extending support to WASH teams in five field offices. Under the direct supervision of Peter Harvey, Chief WASH, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for the following key functions/accountabilities:

of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in WASH or other relevant programmes; experience with climate resilient WASH or solarization of WASH services is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Sound security awareness; • Have affinity with or interest in WASH, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

• UNICEF National staff (NO & GS) from ESA (RO and all COs) and MENA (RO and Yemen Country Office) • National staff holding a Fixed-Term (at least 1 year on the role), Continuing or Permanent Appointment • At least a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree depending on UNV category. • Staff must provide confirmation of Head of Office that SLWOP will be granted.

  • This assignment is reserved for a UNICEF National staff (NO & GS) from East and Southern Africa (Regional Office and all Country Offices) and Middle East and North Africa (Regional Office and Yemen Country Office), Staff from contributing offices will be given priority.

Yemen is located in the West Asia, in the southern Arabian Peninsula, The climate is favorable, and the country has varieties of food that you can enjoy; as well as rich, ancient and welcoming culture. All UN internationally recruited personnel reside in United Nations Common Accommodation Facility (UNCAF), which has been approved by UNDSS. It provides several facilities and amenities such as: swimming-pool, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, as well as a minimarket & a coffee shop. Movement within the city is safe and there is attraction where you can spend time and enjoy, like coffee-shops offering the famous Yemeni-Mocha coffee, and restaurants. Yemen is a unique country and with a unique humanitarian operation. It provides excellent work experience for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness.
