Job title: WASH & Infrastructure Assistant

Employment Grade: I

Reporting to: WASH & Infrastructure Officer

Location: Golo (with travel to other DRC project areas)

Overall purpose of the role:

Under the supervision of the Shelter and Infrastructure Officer, the assistant supports the routine and daily implementation and administration of the WASH and Infrastructure projects for DRC in Central Darfur, including supporting organizing and supervising volunteer teams, monitoring of water quality/chlorination processes, construction teams, assessment and design of appropriate interventions and overseeing in Al Jazeera project areas, principally IDPs and host communities

Responsibilities and Tasks

To achieve the overall and specific position’s objectives the job holder tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program

  • Supporting as part of the team in the in the assessment, design, Bill of Quantities (BoQ) preparations, setup, planning and implementation of all the WASH & Infrastructure projects.
  • Follow up the water chlorination and water testing at the water points and household levels and be charge of water chlorination/testing database, making it available for review by the WASH officer/ Infrastructure Coordinator.
  • Daily monitoring and reporting on all construction activities related to the WASH projects.
  • Supporting in the smooth transport and oversight of materials to the sites of distributions of all kits (NFIs, ESKs and Hygiene kits);
  • Supporting the distribution of NFIs, ESKs and Hygiene kits, and with the WASH Officer, administer the monitoring of distributions as per the distribution SoPs.
  • Daily update and management of data-gathering and tracking tools used to monitor the project;
  • Supporting community Focus Group Discussions pertaining to the project in partnership and/or consultation with MEAL and Protection teams.
  • Supporting the registration of project participants;
  • Strong adherence to safety and security protocols at all times, and along with Code of Conduct – dedication to reporting suspected contraventions;
  • Ensure DRC Code of Conduct is understood, acknowledged in writing, and followed by the project staff and all volunteer labour, and infractions are reported in an appropriate and timely manner;
  • Any other duties as assigned by line manager.

Reporting

  • Ensure that quality and accurate reports and supporting documentation on WASH & Infrastructure activities related to the provision of WASH and Infrastructure assistance, are submitted timely and daily to the WASH Officer/ Area manager. To this end, ensure that both the hard and soft copies of all activity reports are archived on the server and/or uploaded onto online platforms for information management as relevant.
  • Ensure that all information or data shared is done so in a manner that upholds the principle of data protection and confidentiality.

Representation and coordination

  • Supporting the development of positive relationships with beneficiaries, local communities, local authorities, humanitarian partners, service providers etc. in order to maintain trust in DRC’s professional standard and quality of work among all stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all interactions with individual beneficiaries take place in an environment and in a way that respect and promotes their safety, trust and dignity. Ensure that all interactions with other stakeholders such as community members and service providers are conducted in accordance to the principles of respect, confidentiality and collaboration.
  • Attend Sector Meeting/Coordination meetings when delegated.

Operations

  • Ensure the effective implementation of support activities related to the effective implementation of the program, including in terms of logistics, administration, human resources, finance and security. In all matters, comply with internal directive and policies as communicated by the Area Manager.

    Experience and technical competencies:

  • At least graduated 12th, university degree in Water Engineering, Environmental engineering, Biological Science, Public Health or Civil engineering

  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience within a humanitarian organization in WASH, Water quality testing, Public Health or Environmental science.
  • Good knowledge of the area
  • Good experience of working directly with Sudanese and Refugee communities and local authorities
  • Good communications skills; experience with dealing with Communities; good written and spoken English and Arabic
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic report writing ability

Education:

  • At least high school degree, university degree is preferred (technical/scientific faculties)
  • Sound knowledge of engineering designs and software ( ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, GIS , EPANETetc)

    Languages:

  • Fluent in English (both oral and written)

  • Arabic

    Key stakeholders:

  • Internal: Programme Manager, Infrastructure Coordinator, Protection Team, Safety and Liaison, Supply Chain, Finance team, MEAL team Logistics Officer

  • External: Other Humanitarian Partners, UNHCR, IOM, HAC, COR, camp representatives and local authorities
