Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan's children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofan's, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan's school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan's 18 states.

How can you make a difference?

The consultant will specifically be supporting the ongoing emergency WASH response for IDPs in West Darfur:

• Under the guidance of WASH officer/ WASH specialist support robust WASH in emergency programming, from planning, coordination, monitoring & evaluation, including put not limited to: water trucking, emergency water points, emergency latrines, hygiene promotion, solid & liquid waste management.
• Under the guidance of WASH officer/ WASH specialist support the implementation of the joint GoS-UNICEF workplan to achieve the planned target for 2021.
• Support WASH section in conducting assessments/surveys including participation in joint missions, data collection, analysis and reporting;
• Undertake field monitoring of WASH interventions in the state/localities covering water supply, sanitation, hygiene and WASH in schools and health centres and recommend corrective measures as required.
• Assess capacity building needs for Wes, SMOH and NGO partners at state and locality level and collaboration with the supervising WASH Officer/ Specialist design needed support including the conduct of training to build partners capacity on water, sanitation and hygiene promotion.
• Support the organization and coordination for the consultative and validation workshops in the state such as institutional capacity assessment, launching of states ODF roadmap etc.
• Support MOH/ SWC/WES & other agencies in the successful application of the community approaches such as CLTS (Community led Total Sanitation) and CMOM (Community Management of Operation and Maintenance) in the implementation of the WASH interventions;
• In coordination with MOH, WES & existing partners, support cost-effective and techno-economical designs of water supply and sanitation options;
• Collect and compile on monthly basis the progress of CLTS and water supply implementation in UNICEF supported States and locality through regular communication with PCA partners, SMOH and SWC/WES;
• Support the Field Office in strengthening WASH sector monitoring by closely following up with state/localities in the operationalization if WASH IMS and Rapid-Pro;
• Participate in WASH related meetings, coordination forums, committees, joint assessments and any other meetings as required by the Field office.

Output(s)/Deliverable(s) :

Monthly/weekly report on the status of specific tasks/objectives, particularly regarding the technical assistance, monitoring, and quality assurance/quality control of the following targets for up to 60,000 IDPs and nomadic communities:

• Water trucking
• Construction of drainage system with absorption pits
• Construction of emergency latrines (communal)
• Provision of hygiene kit tools
• Provision of cleaning tools include (wheelbarrow, shovel, Racks) & transportation cost
• Provision of hand washing facilities
• Expansion of water supply networks & extension of water points in gathering points
• Support hygiene promotion

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• A University degree in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Public Health, Sanitation and Hygiene, water resources. Advanced degree in one of the mentioned disciplines is an asset
• A minimum of Four years of relevant professional experience in management and implementation experience in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene.
• Knowledge of the latest developments and technology in low cost water, sanitation, hygiene promotion, and capacity building.
• Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
• Fluency in writing, reading, and speaking English and Arabic.
• Strong negotiating, communication and advocacy skills.
• Computer skills, including various office applications.
• Ability to work and live in difficult environment

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

No Fee:

UNICEF DOES NOT CHARGE A FEE AT ANY STAGE OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS (APPLICATION, INTERVIEW MEETING, PROCESSING, OR TRAINING). UNICEF DOES NOT CONCERN ITSELF WITH INFORMATION ON APPLICANTS’ BANK ACCOUNTS.
