Job Overview

The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Instructor is responsible for providing group-based instruction, in the classroom and/or remotely, to adult refugees with various levels of English proficiency. This position is responsible for helping to implement an engaging, effective curriculum that supports refugee acquisition of vocational English language skills. The instructor will work closely with the Employment Supervisor, Economic Empowerment Manager, and other agency staff to ensure that clients achieve goals and objectives.

Major Responsibilities

· Teach Vocational English as a Second Language classes, including specialized tracks focused on hospitality sector work, acquiring basic digital literacy skills, and others as developed and needed;

· Assess students in order to evaluate their progress; track and report student attendance as advised;

· Develop lesson plans and materials in collaboration with the Employment Supervisor and Economic Empowerment Manager;

· Follow established policies and procedures in gathering and recording classroom attendance, homework completed, and other data required by grant funders;

· Coordinate with the Employment Supervisor, Economic Empowerment Manager, Workforce Development Specialists, and other relevant staff through regular communication, participation in team meetings, and other activities as requested;

· Participate in Early Employment and other department team meetings, and staff development activities, as possible;

· Stay current on standard methodologies, pedagogical approaches, and strategies to engage adult ESL learners;

· Follow all policies, procedures and protocols of the agency;

· Assist program supervisor with developing outreach materials and other administrative tasks, including tracking data;

· Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

· Undergraduate degree in a related field; Master’s degree preferred;

· Strong written and oral English language skills;

· ESL certification strongly preferred;

· Experience teaching ESL; 2+ years ESL teaching experience preferred;

· Experience working with immigrant populations and adults strongly preferred;

· On-line instruction/learning experience preferred;

· ID driver’s license and car required;

· Experience with workforce and job training programs preferred;

· Proven cultural competency and sensitivity to working with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds;

· Able to maintain accurate and timely data records of student enrollment and participation;

· Able to take initiative and work independently to resolve challenges;

· Able to bring creativity to the classroom to teach to audiences with varied levels of English;

· Flexible, adaptable, and willing to work in a team environment.

Working Environment

- Standard, professional office environment when in office; - Must have quiet space with reliable internet access when teaching remotely; - Full or partial remote delivery of services while IRC offices are closed due to CV-19; - Access to a reliable vehicle to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area.
