Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in Transport Unit within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. The Vehicle Technician will directly report to the Chief of Unit, Transport.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief Transport Officer or his designated official, the Vehicle Technician will be responsible for the following duties:

Light Workshop Maintenance and Repair duties: • Coordinates and supervises work activities and provide technical advice. • Conducts maintenance and repair of UN-owned armored vehicles in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for automotive electrical, air-conditioning system, suspension system, braking system (including ABS system) and body work and painting. • Inspects and conducts diagnostic and fault tracing; quality control/assurance; road testing, and vehicle recovery. • Identifies reason for technical faults. • Conducts regular site visits of field mission offices and carry out vehicle and mobile equipment inspection, producing reports including maintaining accurate and auditable inspection records, in both hard and electronic format. • Conducts highly technical tasks and safety related repairs such as engine, steering and accident damage repairs. • Carries out product upgrades initiated by armored vehicle manufacturer. • Develops accident damage discrepancy report (DDR), performance documents, vehicle warranties, vendor support and other workshop related reports. • Responsible for the maintenance activities carried out on UN fleet within UNAMA area of operation. • Ensure that all relevant workshop safety procedures are adhered to prior, during, and after maintenance/repair. • Participates in the liaising with the manufacturer representatives for after sales warranty and technical fault. • Identifies requirements for spare parts, and workshop tools and equipment. • Assists training and coaching needs of mechanics and technicians. • Participates in the development of the Transport Unit's Standard Operating Procedures. • Participates in training activities to enhance the capacity of international and national staff members including coordinating briefing activities on road safety, armored vehicle training, driving test and familiarization sessions on various models of vehicles and equipment. • Performs any other duties as may be required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

A valid National Driving License is required.

A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of armored motor vehicles, specialized transport equipment and Mechanized Handling Equipment (MHE) is required.

Certification in driver testing and defensive driving is required.

A minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in supervising a team is required.

Work Experience

  1. A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles, specialized transport equipment, and Mechanized Handling Equipment (MHE) is required.

    1. A minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in supervising a team is required.

    2. Certification in driver testing and defensive driving is required. Please attach copy of certificates in the attachment section.

    3. Experience in planning, managing, and providing transport operations in a complex, volatile, conflict or post-conflict settings is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

• This position is temporarily available until 31 March 2024, with possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
