Result of Service

Co-design UNEP FI’s 2026-2029 strategy with Governance bodies and the UNEP FI secretariat. The resulting documentation should include a strategic narrative outlining priorities, process/framework used to develop the strategy, theory of change, objectives, context, roadmap outlining what is needed to deliver the strategy, and potential KPIs to measure progress. It should also include recommendations for the membership and value proposition.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use, and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices, and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision-making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) works with more than 500 banks and insurers with assets exceeding US$170 trillion work together to facilitate the implementation of UNEP FI’s Principles for Responsible Banking and Principles for Sustainable Insurance, as well as three UN-convened net-zero alliances. Financial institutions work with UNEP FI on a voluntary basis and we help them to apply the industry frameworks and develop practical guidance and tools to position their businesses for the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI has a 2022-2025 strategy, and it should be reviewed for 2026-2029. UNEP FI needs a consultant to co-design a strategy with Governance bodies and the UNEP FI secretariat, including the theory of change, objectives, priorities, roadmap, and potential KPIs to measure progress. It should also include recommendations for strategic priorities for UNEP FI’s membership engagement and value proposition. UNEP FI needs a consultant to support the secretariat to work on the UNEP FI strategy review. The consultant will be required to review materials of the diagnostic phase and engage with UNEP FI’s governance bodies (comprising UNEP FI members from banks and insurers) and UNEP FI secretariat do co-design the UNEP FI strategy 2026-2029. Specific tasks and responsibilities • Co-design all deliverables in partnership with Governance Bodies and UNEP FI secretariat • Review of materials of the UNEP FI strategy diagnostic and existing recommendations • Develop a framework to design UNEP FI strategy. • Develop a draft including the theory of change, objectives, and priorities. • Consult key stakeholders on the draft strategy. • Update the draft strategy considering initial recommendations/feedback. • Develop a 4-year roadmap and plan (high-level) and potential KPIs to measure progress. • A final proposal for final feedback and prepare consultations for members in 2025. • Support the integration of the strategy in our integrated work planning process. The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of the Head of UNEP FI

Qualifications/special skills

Education: Bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications, business, economics and finance, sustainability/sustainable development or an environmental field. Professional experience: At least 10 years’ experience in sustainable finance ideally working in financial institutions or in consulting. Experience in project management, strategy development, summarizing insights and outputs and writing reports with key take aways and next steps. Experience of writing/editing technical reports desirable.

Languages

Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.

Additional Information

Skills & knowledge: • Proven knowledge of the field of sustainable finance is required, understanding of drivers of sustainability in the financial sector. • Skilled in strategy development and knowledge on Strategy frameworks. • Skilled in facilitating discussions between actors with different points of view and building together insights and recommendations. • Excellent communication skills (listening, spoken and written). • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills. • The incumbent is expected to work independently with minimal supervision and must have significant latitude to be self-directed and be highly motivated. • Problem solving skills are desirable.
