This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

UNHCR Sub-Office in Quito (Solanda) covers 7 provinces in the center of Ecuador, including the capital of Quito. The provinces covered are diverse; due to their geopolitical situation; ranging from coastal area (Santo Domingo and the Northern half of los Rios) to the capital city (Pichincha); and the central Andean region with a higher percentage of indigenous population (Tungurahua; Cotopaxi; Chimborazo and Bolivar). The incumbent will mostly be involved in the activities related to Santo Domingo area. Santo Domingo is 4th largest city in Ecuador that has grown exponentially over the years, due to both internal migration, and people coming from other countries (mostly Colombia). As there is no direct presence of UNHCR in Santo Domingo, the volunteer will be expected to perform regular missions to that area.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Sub-Office, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: - Learn how to identify vulnerable groups or individuals who may need special attention or special arrangements and how officers make recommendations on the needs of different groups of refugees. - Learn how to contribute to assessing of protection and assistance needs of refugees and asylum-seekers in the region and monitor implementation of refugee assistance programmes. - In co-ordination with implementing partners, learn who to handle the reception, registration, and provision of assistance to persons of concern to UNHCR. - Participates in providing inputs for project submissions and periodic narrative and financial reports for the annual programme. - Learn how to contribute to develop and maintain relations with local authorities ensuring smooth negotiations in all aspects of UNHCR's mandate for the benefit of refugees. - Be aware of the monitoring of the security situation in the area and intervene as appropriate with the local authorities. - Travel on missions to Santo Domingo to familiarize with the protection context, learn how to coordinate with key strategic partners initiatives and programs aiming/strengthening the protection and assistance of POC in transit and in destiny, and maintain a direct line of communication (regular consultations) with the refugees and refugee-led organizations in this locality. - Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of Protection projects designed to cover strategic and practical needs of the population of interest from the mainstreaming of the differential approach. - Assist in ensuring that people in vulnerable situations (women, children, youth, the disabled population, the elderly) are identified and their needs are met through the public attention and reception in SOPI area of operation. - Contribute in a timely and efficient manner the necessary supplies for the preparation of documents and reports in accordance with UNHCR requirements. - Assist the Protection and registration team in the direct and mobile registration pilot exercise in SOPI area of operation.
- Perform any other required or assigned tasks by the supervisor. - Psycho-social support will be ensured to the person during the entire assignment.

(up to three years) or demonstrated interest in: • International protection, human rights, and humanitarian responses to persons in vulnerable conditions.
• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Quito is the capital of Ecuador. It is a city of approximately 2 million people. The climate is varied, you can combine hot and warm days with colder and rainy ones. It is located at an altitude of approximately 2800m. Being the capital city, it offers a great variety of activities, both cultural and sporting, as well as many places of commerce, restaurants, etc. The health system is public and private. The response of private health services is adequate in the city being good centers. There is good connectivity in the city with high-speed Internet as well as availability of the 4G network. Accommodation is available in smaller houses or shared apartments for students.
