The UNICEF Mongolia Country Office works in close partnership with the Government of Mongolia, NGOs and local communities to ensure the realization of the rights of every child in Mongolia. UNICEF works to ensure that children enjoy the rights guaranteed to them in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). In the current Country Program (2017-2021), UNICEF Mongolia is driven by an overall objective of ensuring better equity for all children in Mongolia, especially the most disadvantaged, and the creation of a policy environment for the promotion and protection of their rights.

How can you make a difference?

UNICEF Mongolia regularly convenes meetings, workshops and consultations with partners, as well as publishes advocacy materials, studies and evaluations to communicate with donors and the general public. These activities frequently require verbal and/or written translation between English and Mongolian.

Therefore, UNICEF Mongolia is seeking the services of highly skilled English to Mongolian and Mongolian to English translators who can support quality simultaneous, consecutive and written translation services in the areas of Education, WASH, Health, Nutrition, Child Protection, HIV/AIDS, Early Childhood Development, Community Development as well as environment, public finance management, economy, mining and environment. The selected individual consultant(s) will provide Mongolian to English and English to Mongolian translation services, as and when needed, in relation to the implementation of our Country Programme.

The interested applicant shall submit their application to their preferred translations services or all translation services listed below with their cover letter, CV and financial quotes with timeframes on each services.

    • English to Mongolian
    • Mongolian to English
  4. Revise the output based on feedback at maximum of two (2) revisions within one month.
  5. Providing UNICEF with the final output in form of hard copy and soft copy which has been saved in UNICEF’ applicable software following the required font type and size.

  6. Simultaneous Oral Interpretation

1. Perform simultaneous oral interpretation/translation as follows:

  • English to Mongolian
  • Mongolian to English

2. Background materials will be provided by UNICEF/Partner to familiarize himself / herself on the topics to be discussed.

  • English to Mongolian
  • Mongolian to English

2. Background materials will be provided by UNICEF/Partner to familiarize himself / herself on the topics to be discussed.

Place of Work

The contractor will be mostly home-based and is expected to have his/her own workspace and translation equipment. The contractor shall also arrange its own transportation including email access.

There may be an occasional requirement for translation assignments during UNICEF field trips. In such cases, UNICEF will provide support in field transport arrangements in line with organizational policies and procedures.

Timeframe

The roster shall be valid for a period of 2 (two) years effective from the candidate selection and approval date, agreed upon both parties. However, UNICEF reserves the right to discontinue the use of the services if the level or performance delivery level is not satisfactory to UNICEF.

Supervision

The Contract Supervisor will be the respective Output Manager that is responsible for contracting each individual assignment. UNICEF will provide direction to enhance ability of the individual to provide quality outputs on timely basis. Feedback on quality and timeliness of outputs will also be provided regularly to improve the performance of individual by relevant programme Output Managers.

Preferred selection / assessment process

The roster of translators will be advertised publicly. The interested applicant shall submit their application to their preferred translations services or all translation services listed above with their cover letter, CV and financial quotes with timeframes on each services.

Assessment and selection process will be based on a desk review of cover letters and CV’s and followed by the technical examination. The most cost-efficient proposals of those deemed suitable shall be offered contracts. The assessment will be conducted by by the panel consisting of at least 3 UNICEF specialists.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • University degree in language/translation with at least 5 years of proven record of working experience as a written translator and interpreter in solid translation work.
  • Solid writing skills with demonstrated ability for logical and analytical writing and translating technical language in concise, clear, and appealing way
  • Excellent in Mongolian and English languages
  • Strong communicator with good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide translation service despite short notice
  • Well organized and structured, good attention for detail
  • Familiar with children’s issues, experience with UNICEF/UN will be a plus

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
