Translate legal documents accurately into Kurdish Sorani

You have:

• A first-level degree from a university or equivalent institution in translation or a relevant language field is required.
• Five years’ experience relevant to translation from English into Kurdish Sorani is required.
• Experience in translation from English into Kurdish Sorani, preferably scientific and legal texts, in criminal law or international Human Rights is required.
• Experience in translation from English into Kurdish Kurmanji, preferably scientific and legal texts, in criminal law or international Human Rights is desirable.
• Familiarity with the context in Syria and Iraq under ISIL is desirable.
• Previous experience within an international organisation or an accountability mechanism is desirable.
• Fluency in English and Kurdish Sorani is required.

Result of Service

Output required will be accurate and fully formatted translations into Kurdish Sorani of three legal documents of 14 pages and 2,873 words in total from English into Kurdish Sorani.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is within the Operational Support Section (OSS) of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM), in Geneva, Switzerland. The Contractor will report to the Legal Officer in charge of the project from the Support and Sharing Section and is expected to undertake full translations from English into Kurdish Sorani. The Contractor shall provide camera-ready translation in Kurdish Sorani, free of grammar and syntactical errors. The expected start date of this consultancy is 16 December 2024 and is intended to be carried out remotely. Fulfilment of the responsibilities of this position may necessitate engagement with material and/or information that may be distressing. “The United Nations contracts Consultants and Individual Contractors regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds or disabilities”

Qualifications/special skills

A first-level degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status in translation or in another relevant language field is required. A minimum of six years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the first-level university degree. Five years’ experience relevant to translation from English into Kurdish Sorani is required. Experience in translation from English into Kurdish Sorani, preferably scientific and legal texts, in criminal law or international Human Rights is required. Experience in translation from English into Kurdish Kurmanji, preferably scientific and legal texts, in criminal law or international Human Rights is desirable. Familiarity with the context in Syria and Iraq under the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is desirable. Previous experience within an international organisation or an accountability mechanism is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the official working languages of the Secretariat. For this position fluency in English and Kurdish Sorani is required.
