Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located within the United Nations Investigative Team for Accountability of Da'esh / ISIL (UNITAD) and will be based in Baghdad, Iraq. T

UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da'esh) in Iraq.

Responsibilities Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Head of Language Services Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: - Edits texts of a specialized or technical nature in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice. - Aims at high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original written statements, in particular both legal terminology and colloquial language. - Revise, cross-check and edit drafted translations (including briefs, reports, witnesses’ statements, legal and forensic materials), to ensure uniformity and quality. - Consults with UNITAD’s units and offices and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors. - Checks his/her language version against the language of the original draft, redrafts incorrect or unclear passages and translates and inserts any passage that has been omitted. - Observes the established terminology and usage; and ensures consistency. - May assist the head of LSU with the provision of inputs in relation to translation work strategies. - Translates correspondence, contracts, quotations, regulations, certificates and legal documents (i.e., court decisions, indictment sheets, police reports) and other material from Arabic to English and vice versa, whilst ensuring the deadlines are met and the quality of the translation is adequate. - Keeps track of all unit’s translations and maintain copies of the translated materials. - Translates and Transcript audio and video selected items. - Performs other related duties as required.

Education A first level degree in translation, linguistics or languages is required.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of experience in translation and/or interpretation is required.

Work experience within the UN system is desirable.

Languages For the position advertised, fluency in both English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of Kurdish is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
