Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Women in West and Central Africa represent the most deprived group of the population in spite of their paramount social and economic role. They have limited access to, and control over critical resources, as a result of social, cultural and economic norms. UN Women’s programmatic work to support women’s economic empowerment in the region is centered around three pillars:

• Improving women’s access to climate resilient agricultural value chains.

• Promoting and strengthening women entrepreneurship; and

• Enhancing women’s income security and social protection.

In the context of its work on Women Economic Empowerment, WCARO WEE is producing a number of knowledge and communications products in different areas. These products are strategic corporate tools to present UN Women’s WCARO WEE results, mobilize resources and advocate for key policy reforms. Therefore, final quality of the products is critical. In that context, the services of a translator and an editor to translate and edit documents and knowledge products are needed. WCARO, WEE is producing a number of major knowledge products on Social Protection, Unpaid care and a green jobs.

Reporting to the Regional Policy Advisor on Women Economic Empowerment, the consultant will be responsible for translating and editing various documents and publications, including annexes, boxes, figures and references, following the UN Women Style Guide.

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will work with the Economic Empowerment team to translate, edit, and proofread publications, reports, key messages, and policy tools including their boxes, figures, annexes and references. The consultant will ensure all text is free of errors and aligns with the UN Women Style Guide in order to prepare for publication.

The editor will be paid upon successful completion of each deliverable phase as per the number of reports finalized at UNWOMEN satisfaction. If additional tasks arise that are beyond the scope of the original agreement, contract revisions and extensions will be negotiated, and amendments made; and remuneration will be handled as required.

Required Skills and Experience

The assignment is for an experienced translator and editor who is fully conversant with current debates on gender equality and the advancement of women’s and girls’ human rights. The editor must possess a demonstrable command of gender and development issues and terminology more broadly. Be well spoken in French and English.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) or equivalent in communications, journalism, language/linguistics, translation, or related field.

Experience:

  • 10 years of editorial experience, including working on gender equality and women's empowerment.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating production of large-scale reports or similar project coordination experience.
  • 5-10 years’ editorial experience, including in French and English.
  • Knowledge and understanding of gender and development issues and the appropriate terminology.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications and editorial skills.

Languages:

  • Excellent command of French (oral and written).
  • Excellent of English (oral and written). Other UN languages an asset.
