You have:

  • Native-level French and fluent English, especially in reading and writing.
  • Experience with technical translation, ideally in areas related to urban planning, transport, sustainability, or active mobility.
  • Prior translation, writing, or proofreading experience (up to 2 years).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, comfortable working with diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Microsoft Teams.

The Urban Mobility Team at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is at the forefront of driving the transition toward inclusive, climate-responsive mobility systems that prioritize people and the planet. Anchored in UN-Habitat’s value proposition, research and knowledge sharing, capacity building, advocacy, and fostering participation, the team collaborates with national and local governments to develop urban mobility plans that are grounded in local realities. Working through the Avoid–Shift–Improve framework, the team supports cities in avoiding unnecessary motorized travel, shifting to more environmentally friendly transport modes, and improving the energy efficiency of existing systems. This approach is strengthened by cross-cutting priorities, including empowering women in the transport sector, ensuring safety and inclusivity, and promoting evidence-based decision making.

Pan-African Action Plan for Active Mobility (PAAPAM) The Pan African Action Plan for Active Mobility (PAAPAM) is a comprehensive framework aimed at transforming mobility across Africa by prioritising the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized transport users. It was co-developed through extensive stakeholder engagement and is designed to support regional and sub regional bodies, national and local governments and other stakeholders in prioritizing and investing in the needs of the billion people who walk and cycle every day in Africa.

By translating key materials into French, the selected volunteer will help ensure inclusive access to the Action Plan for Francophone African stakeholders, enabling them to take part in the transition toward enabling walking and cycling.

We are seeking one (1) Online Volunteer to support our work in enabling walking and cycling in Africa by translating content from English to French for the Pan African Action Plan for Active Mobility (PAAPAM).

To this end, the selected Online Volunteer will be asked to: • Translate the Pan African Action Plan for Active Mobility for national and city level stakeholders • Support the translation of policy briefs for interagency coordination on the action plan. • Support in ensuring that francophone regions have access to PAAPAM resources (developing and translating PowerPoint presentations and videos in French • Ensure the products are clear, concise, and audience-appropriate, and aligned with our communications guidelines and advocacy tone.

The selected Online Volunteer will receive the source documents and will be supported with: • Guidance on target audience (e.g. local governments, regional bodies, transport experts, and civil society in Francophone Africa). • The PAAPAM communications style guide. • Background on PAAPAM’s goals and mission.
