This is a UNV contract. More about UNV contracts.

The course is designed for all new personnel of OCHA as well as the partner organizations working with OCHA to meet the needs of those who are affected by crises. It also provides foundational knowledge to aid workers seeking to gain an understanding of OCHA, the wider humanitarian system, and the UN system. The course is available as a free course on the Disaster Ready platform.

Details Mission and objectives The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the mandated agency for the coordination of humanitarian response, policy development and humanitarian advocacy. OCHA supports humanitarian organizations to respond effectively to the needs of people caught in crises, to understand and analyze their needs, and to mobilize international assistance. It provides tools and services to help humanitarian organizations ensure that no one affected by a crisis is left behind. The People and Culture Section in OCHA supports and empowers OCHA people to contribute to and thrive in an inclusive and harmonious workplace culture for the effective delivery of OCHA’s mandate, in accordance with UN core values and the OCHA People Strategy. The Learning and Development Unit is the unit responsible for providing quality learning programmes and services to staff to enable them to deliver effectively on the mandate. Induction and orientation of new staff is part of LDU’s responsibilities.

Context The OCHA Welcome Package is a collection of resources that is made available to new staff within the first 6 months of their onboarding to develop the knowledge and understanding of OCHA mandate and operations. As part of the Welcome Package, the LDU team has coordinated development of an e-learning course (OCHA e-Foundational course: Welcome to OCHA!) drawing inputs from all OCHA internal functional areas. The course, published in 2021, provides an overview of the mandate and vision, core functions and objectives of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The course exists in English, French and Spanish.

The English version of the course has been updated in 2023-24 with new text for an approximately 12,000-14,000 words. OCHA LDU is now actively seeking the assistance of one Online Volunteer who can assist in translating the newly added text from English into Spanish and conduct final proofreading. The assignment should be completed online, with an ideal start in end-March 2024.
