Result of Service The services provided by the Consultant(s) are expected to result in an overall improved knowledge of trained experts on the flyway approach to waterbird and wetlands conservation, management and sustainable use, as well enhanced skills in the design, organisation and delivery of similar training courses at national level.

Specific expected results include:

¿ Improved understanding of trained experts in the flyway approach for the conservation, management and sustainable use of migratory waterbirds and wetlands, ¿ Enhanced ability of trained experts to design, organize and deliver similar training courses at the national level, ¿ Overall improved capacity in the Indian Ocean Island states for migratory waterbird and wetlands conservation through the establishment and maintenance of a network of experts trained in flyway conservation.

Work Location Home based with travel to the workshop venue (Mauritius)

Expected duration 38 days within a 6-month period

Duties and Responsibilities The consultant(s) will be required to conduct/deliver the following, in close collaboration with the AEWA Secretariat:

a) Design and develop/plan the AEWA SIDS flyway ToT course:

¿ Design the ToT course content, flow and methodology, making use of relevant training tools and resources including the WOW FTK and the toolkit on waterbird identification and counting of the French National Agency for Hunting and Wildlife, while adapting these to the specific context of the Indian Ocean SIDS, ¿ Develop a draft agenda and detailed session plan for the ToT course, ¿ Design the workflow/format/methodology/approach for the ToT course sessions and associated in-session meeting assignments for participants, ¿ Identify and plan supporting course materials, presentations and tools relevant for each course session, ¿ Support with the process for the selection of suitable participants to be trained, ¿ Identify any tools or system requirements necessary for the smooth operation of the course, ¿ Consult with identified participants to plan/develop/adapt the ToT course programme/presentations/tools, ¿ Present the final ToT course content, workflow and methodology to the AEWA Secretariat.

b) Conduct/deliver the ToT course:

¿ Lead the delivery of all planned sessions of the five-day ToT course, ¿ Lead a debrief session with the relevant AEWA Secretariat staff at the end of each day of ToT course, ¿ Capture and document the key results/outcomes/recommendations of the ToT course.

c) Document the meeting outcomes:

¿ Produce a draft report of the ToT course for review and comments by the AEWA Secretariat, ¿ Produce and submit a final report for publication on the AEWA website and sharing with course participants, ¿ Design and implement an approach to collate feedback from course participants during/after the ToT course.

To ensure the usefulness and effectiveness of the ToT course for the purpose of improving knowledge and understanding on flyway conservation and enhancing capacity to design and deliver national flyway training courses, the following fundamental principles will be taken into consideration:

¿ Participatory: sessions must engage all participants to ensure maximum dialogue and networking, ¿ Interactive: sessions must be interactive, using group work and practical exercises to stimulate experience sharing and learning, ¿ Technically relevant: ensuring that participants acquire the relevant technical knowledge on identified key topics, ¿ Tangible outputs produced: The course design and delivery methodology shall ensure that participants obtain tangible outputs which will be relevant for improving their knowledge and understanding of the flyway conservation concept, design/delivery of national flyway courses and establishing/maintaining a regional network of flyway conservation experts beyond the regional ToT course, ¿ Outcome-oriented: The course delivery approach/ methodology must enable measurable outcomes for participant to clearly demonstrate the value of participation in the course (e.g., projects concepts on delivery of national training courses to be developed and reviewed, and a network of experts to be established), ¿ Collaborative: The course approach/methodology must encourage collaboration throughout to create the foundation for future networking among the participants. ¿ Adaptable: ensure adaptation of course substance/content to the varying levels of knowledge and understanding of participants as well as to the specificities of the Indian Ocean SIDS states, while taking into consideration the key languages used in the region (i.e., English and French),

Qualifications/special skills- A university degree or equivalent professional qualification in a field related to nature conservation (e.g., Biology, Live Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Ornithology, Forestry), environmental management (e.g., Wildlife Conservation and Management, Natural Resources Management, Wetlands Management, climate change adaptation/mitigation), policy (e.g., Environmental Policy) or other relevant fields, is required.

- A minimum of 5 (five) years of experience working in the field of nature conservation and/or designing and facilitating collaborative meetings/workshops/trainings for international organizations is required

- Experience working in multi-cultural environments in a variety of settings is required

- Experience working in the African region and/or with stakeholders from Africa is required

- Experience in innovative, leading edge collaborative workshop facilitation principles and methods is desirable

Languages Fluency in both English and French (the working languages of AEWA, both of which are used in the African region and are relevant for the targeted island states for this ToT), is required.

However, all documentation and reporting to be prepared by the consultant will be in English and will be translated to French by the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat, as applicable.
