What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the role

The associates (up to 3 positions) will contribute to the work of the Protection of Civilian Population (PCP) Unit, which sets the methodology for improving protections for civilian populations in armed conflict or violence, and provides expertise as a pool of specialists within the Department of Protection and Essential Services.

Each associate will work with 1-2 Advisers or Managers and focus on a few thematic files.

The associates will support the work on the following tasks:

  • Research on new and emerging topics, especially linked to community-based protection, conduct of hostilities, law enforcement operations, prevention linked to international humanitarian law
  • Training (e-learning and in person)
  • Information management
  • Administration

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

In the PCP unit, Associates are encouraged to:

  • Conduct research projects linked to the unit’s operational priorities
  • Assist in finalizing/translating guidelines and training materials on methodologies and practices linked to the protection of civilians
  • Contribute to documents promoting protection concepts internally, as well as reports for external audiences to express ICRC points of view on protection concerns
  • Assist in following the implementation of pilot projects
  • Assist with the monitoring of PCP-related developments and activities in priority operational contexts.
  • Update relevant communication platforms, such as internal and external webpage or communities of practice tools
  • Assist with the preparation of and reporting on internal and external meetings and events.

Reports to (role)

PCP Adviser

Relationships

  • The associate will primarily work with their supervisor, and will work with other members of the PCP unit as needed.
  • The associate will interact with other Protection units as needed, in particular with the data, training and thematics units.

Scope & Impact

As members of a specialized unit, the associate’s work will be geographically global in scope.

Education and Language requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in international affairs, politics, sociology, or other relevant field.
  • Languages: very good command of spoken and written English AND at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish

Professional Experience required

At least 6 months of professional experience, including internships, working with affected populations, preferably in an international environment. No more than 24 months of experience, as the associateship is intended for recent graduates.
