You have:
- Students currently enrolled toward earning their bachelor's degree.
- Prior experience or coursework in environmental and/or behavioral science research.
- Completed course work in basic statistical methods, experience with R, and prior experience in handling and analyzing quantitative datasets is desirable.
- Experience with Microsoft applications.
- Writing skills.
- Enthusiasm regarding climate solutions.
- Fluency in English.
- Fluency in Spanish is desirable.
About the Program:
WRI a widely recognized leader on energy and climate issues has established The Living Lab: Behavioral Design for Equitable Climate Action (TLL) to raise the profile of behavior change as a critical climate solution. Specifically, TLL will 1) partner with local leaders and stakeholders in order to identify policies that can shift populations towards the most impactful pro-climate behaviors; 2) co-design field-based projects that inform national policy and connect to global movements; and 3) leverage partnerships to catalyze our research and accelerate adoption of policies at the subnational, national and cross-national level. TLL explores both climate and socio-economic benefits of proposed behavioral policy changes.
This position is hybrid and will require a few days per week in our Washington DC office.
What you will do:
This internship is an opportunity to work with a diverse team of individuals working to change the world. The Intern will be part of the TLL team within WRI. Responsibilities include:
- Support ongoing research efforts, including supporting editing and basic data analysis for upcoming papers on the impact of behavior change strategies.
- Support WRI staff in summarizing research findings in a WRI-published issue brief/report and developing communications products to publicize that report.
- Support WRI staff in the implementation of a water conservation project in Mexico (support will be virtual from our DC office).
- Co-lead the drafting and publication of our popular newsletter, Bite-Sized Behavioral Insights.
- Supporting research and proposal writing efforts to explore specific applications of behavioral science in key WRI technical areas like energy and transport.
- There is an opportunity for the intern to contribute to external WRI publications, Working Papers, data visualizations and popular press articles.
Internship Learning Outcomes:
- Gain understanding of climate change policy and how it relates to individual-level and systems-level behavior change.
- Support publications for different audiences.
- Gain experience in handling both quantitative and qualitative data
- Research a range of topics related to applications of behavioral science to climate change.
- Gain valuable experience supporting a large-scale, rigorous behavioral intervention.
- Access to a global team of behavioral and environmental science experts, mentorship opportunities, and a unique inside view of WRI.

Compensation
The pay for this internship opportunity is $20/hour for undergrads; $22/hour for graduates and $24/hour for PhD students.
Length of Contract:
This is a part-time (20 hours/week), 3-month internship with a flexible start and end date.
Location:
- This is a hybrid internship that will be based out of our Washington D.C. office. You will be required to work in the Washington DC office at least 8 days a month.
- WRI will provide a laptop for the duration of your internship.
