BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

Assisting almost 100 million people in around 83 countries each year, the World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. WFP has more than 17,000 staff worldwide of whom over 90 percent are based in the countries where the agency provides assistance.

ShareTheMeal is developed as the first pilot project of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, part of the Innovation and Knowledge Management Division, which aims to combine start-up lean thinking with non-profit projects to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition.

The ShareTheMeal app was launched in 2015 and has been downloaded by ca. 3,000,000 people. To date, more than $ 40M have been raised for some of WFP’s most critical operations. Key markets are the US, Germany, UAE and select other markets. The team is focused on further developing the app to include new and innovative features, increasing the engagement of existing users and growing the user base as well as building strategic partnerships with tech companies and startups.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant, reporting to the Head of Engineering for the ShareTheMeal initiative, is expected to:

  1. Support testing and verification of new features for upcoming ShareTheMeal app releases, working closely with the QA Engineer
  • Prioritize, plan and coordinate both session-based and tour-based testing activities
  • Perform Confirmatory Testing, create comprehensive and well-structured test cases, run UATs, regression tests, maintain test cases and monitor known risks
  • Perform Exploratory Testing, determine test cases and conduct cognitively structured ad-hoc experiments, examine potential risks and report them
  • Help to identify and support automation of testing activities
    1. Work with software developers to ensure quality across devices, assets and user locales
  • Provide feedback on API specifications
  1. Understand requirements and review necessary specifications, liaising with Product and Design Teams
  2. Identify, document and report test metrics
  3. Support adopting a Quality Assistance model and help improving it
  4. Collect and share information about best practices and modern testing tools, open-source projects and test strategies
  5. Help troubleshoot issues
  6. Other activities
  • Act as facilitator to staff on developing the organization
  • Assist the management of the ShareTheMeal initiative, the Head of the Innovation Accelerator or the Director Innovation and Change Management with other activities as required

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  • Comprehensive and well-structured test plans for releasing new ShareTheMeal app versions
  • Documentation and handover of testing processes and tracked test metrics to the Head of Engineering for ShareTheMeal
  • A maintainable and triaged bug tracking system in place

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience: At least 2 years of experience in software testing; prior experience with mobile app testing is a must

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Technical professional knowledge of in the above-mentioned field
  • Good understanding of mobile app UX and a keen eye for detail
  • Good understanding of RESTful APIs, HTTP methods, and error codes
  • Experience with a scripting language (Python or JS) is beneficial
  • Knowledge of modern testing strategies
  • Good understanding of Agile principles
  • Strong analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative
  • Ability to interact with managers with maturity and tact
  • Mature judgment with strong interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy
  • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the World Food Programme

Languages: In addition to a high proficiency in written and spoken English, knowledge of a second UN language is a plus.
