OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The overall goal of the department is to support and collaborate with the Member States for further development and implementation of national policies and strategies which ensure equitable and universal access to quality health care to accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn and child mortality, address gender and equity differential with rights based approach, ending violence against women, girls and children, prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, improve sexual and reproductive health including elimination of cervical cancer and focus on family planning; strengthen midwifery and nursing health workforce, promote adolescent health and wellbeing, school health, health promotion and address social determinants of health across life course, healthy settings and promoting healthy ageing.Within this context, the objectives of this position are to provide technical support to Member States in collaboration with WHO country offices, national counterparts in Member States, UN organizations, development partners (multilateral agencies, non-governmental and non-profit organizations), professional associations and academic institutions, including WHO collaborating centres and national centres of expertise towards providing a mainstream response to for successful implementation of the Global Strategy and Action Plan on Ageing and Health and Decade of Healthy Ageing 2020-2030. S/he will represent the Organization in relevant technical cooperation with Member States, international agencies and other stakeholders on health workforce issues, with a special focus on Healthy Ageing.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the overall guidance of the Director, Programme Management and direct supervision of the Director, UHC/Family Health, the incumbent will coordination with relevant Regional Advisers and WHO country office colleagues, the incumbent will be asked to carry out technical support activities and analytical work, depending on their range of knowledge, skills and experience; local needs, and with the aim of supporting countries to make sustained and equitable progress in the area of Healthy Ageing:

Provide technical support to Member States in programme activities related to national policy/strategies development and implementation and capacity building in the area of Ageing and Health.

In collaboration with FGL team, provide technical support and strengthen collaboration across technical departments in the regional and country offices on Healthy Ageing/Decade of Health Ageing.

Promote multisectoral collaboration and partnership with UN agencies and other organizations working in the area of Ageing and Health;

Develop/adapt technical guidelines, tools, standards, communication strategies and advocacy materials related to ageing and health;

Decade of Healthy Ageing 2020-2030.Develop/adapt evidence-based normative guidance on clinical and or social interventions to prevent and address care dependence in older age, including lont-term care and implementation of interventions to

maintain intrinsic capacity and refine care pathways

Provide technical support to Member States in building /strengthening capacity in Integrated Care of Older People (ICOPE) for different cadres of health care providers.

Perform other relevant functions as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in medicine and a postgraduate in social science or public health from a recognized university Desirable: Postgraduate degree in geriatrics from a recognized university

Experience

Essential: At least seven years of relevant experience, including few years of international exposure in the area of geriatric care, clinical care or public health work in the development context or other development related work Desirable: Previous experience of working in UN organizations

Skills

Knowledge of medical and person-centered (functioning) aspects of ageing; programme planning and proposal development and theories and principles of public health Technical competence in geriatric issues/long-term care and good understanding of other related programmes are essential Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex issues, norms and concepts related to healthy ageing across the life-course in culturally acceptable and simple language.Skills in training and facilitation Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with people of various cultural backgrounds with strong interpersonal skills necessary. Desirable:Broad knowledge of public health Demonstrated analytical and advocacy skills

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2107 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
