The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region agroecosystems are facing increasing pressures, with climate change and population growth contributing to land degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and depletion of marine and aquatic resources. Continued unsustainable management of water and land resources threaten the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Climate change have disproportionate impacts on small-scale producers and low-income populations, especially in locations in Africa. The Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) urges the implementation of adaptation approaches that address water scarcity, soil health, sustainable land management and ecosystems-based approaches. Sustainable natural resources management is also important given increasing evidence for protracted crises linked to conflicts over natural resources. Improving governance contributes to community resilience to climate and other shocks. The aim of the Regional Priority on greening agriculture is to make agricultural systems more sustainable, productive and resilient, while reducing negative environmental impacts and protecting natural resources.

Silvopastoral systems are the most common and extended agroforestry systems in the world, with multiple combinations of management systems, practices and play important economic, social and environmental roles and contribute to adapting to climate change, combating des-ertification, watershed management, conserving biodiversity and providing feed and habitat for livestock and wildlife as well as food and employment for local communities. These sys-tems, however, suffer from continuous degradation resulting from combination of multiple forces.

The UN member states’ call for a “Decade of Action” to achieve the SDGs emphasizes the need to shift paradigms and drive innovations, which will be crucial in efforts to integrated land restoration and management as an integral element of transforming agriculture and food systems. The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) that has been desig-nated by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the year 2026 calls on Member States to further build the capacity of and continue or increase responsible investment in the pastoral livestock sector, including for sustainable land management practices, and maintain and enhance biodiversity.

Task description the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Reviewing relevant national reports on silvopastoral importance and development charac-teristics, research publications, remote sensing information, maps and other available data sources; • Conducting the mapping exercise for relevant investors, including banks, microfinance institutions, and insurance providers, the manufacturing industry, agribusiness and farmer/pastoralist organizations to identify the local investments that support the devel-opmental angle of the silvopastoral systems. • Providing support on the potential awareness and training for the targeted countries. • Contributing to the preparation of relevant articles, reports, newsletters, and news.
