This is a UNV contract. More about UNV contracts.

Community kitchens are a transformative initiative in Afghanistan that empower women and young girls by creating a dynamic entry point for them to take the reins in addressing critical issues facing vulnerable communities, such as food security, and dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. These kitchens serve as a vibrant platform for women to come together, exchange ideas and resources, and cultivate entrepreneurial skills while delivering social outcomes that enhance social safety nets through the provision of wholesome meals to community members and address their immediate fear of hunger due to poverty

By supporting women in taking a leadership role in tackling food security at the community level, the community kitchen initiative is spurring a shift in perceptions about the crucial role that women play in community welfare and development. Women have long been relegated to the sidelines, with their contributions often marginalized or ignored. Community kitchens represent a seismic shift, a bold and inspired movement that empowers women to step forward and take action to tackle social and economic issues head-on.

Through their participation in community kitchens, women gain access to a wealth of knowledge and resources that help them elevate their economic status and increase their financial independence. They can also develop critical business skills, boost their confidence, and become active agents of change within their communities. By providing a safe and supportive space for women to collaborate and strive towards a common goal, community kitchens are igniting a sense of solidarity and driving gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Community kitchens are an essential component of sustainable development, a linchpin in the fight for gender equality, and a powerful tool for building social cohesion and peace. By empowering women to take the lead in addressing key priorities such as food security, community kitchens are promoting economic mobility, delivering critical support to vulnerable communities, and fostering social connections that strengthen the fabric of society.

In short, community kitchens are not just a kitchen but a place of transformation, movement, and a catalyst for change. They are an investment in the future of Afghanistan, an inspired initiative that supports women-led social enterprises, promotes social safety networks, and drives sustainable development in communities across the country.
