Overview

Provide high-quality reporting and assist UNEP North America Office

You have:

  • A first level degree is required.
  • Two years of experience in environmental or international policy; or a master's degree in environmental or international policy is required.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills are required.
  • Substantive knowledge of climate change, nature protection, and pollution prevention is desirable.
  • Experience in administration or project support is desirable.
  • Proficient knowledge of O365 products including MS Outlook.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a multi-ethnic working environment are required.
  • Knowledge of the UN system and culture and familiarity with UN interagency networks is desired but not essential.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable but not mandatory.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This position is located in UNEP's North America Office in Washington, D.C. Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and the direct supervision of the Program Officer, the Consultant will perform the following duties: •Contribute to and coordinate the preparation of the Office’s monthly regional political intelligence brief. •Provide policy support as requested by the Director and Program Officers on high-priority environmental topics, particularly climate change, pollution prevention, and pollution prevention. •Attend relevant meetings, prepares minutes, monitors follow-up activities. •Research, compiles, and organize information to prepare briefings for relevant meetings, events, and missions. •Assist in the preparation of Director and Program Officers’ public presentations using appropriate technology/software. •Provide direct assistance to the Director and Program Officers by maintaining the Director's calendar/schedule; coordinating preparations for missions; and providing ongoing general logistical support. •Ensures smooth and efficient information flow to the Director and within the office more broadly. •Provides assistance in the coordination of office-wide activities (meetings, training, etc.), special projects and events. •Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

• A first level degree is required. •First level degree with two years of experience working in the area of environmental and/or international policy; alternatively, a master’s degree in the area of environmental and/or international policy is required •Strong writing and analytical skills are required. •Substantive knowledge of issues related to climate change, nature protection, and pollution prevention is desirable. •Experience in administration or project support is desirable. •Proficient knowledge of O365 products incl. MS Outlook. •Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a multi-ethnic working environment. •Knowledge of the UN system and culture and familiarity with the UN interagency networks is desired but not essential.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
