Result of Service The provision of regular/consistent language training services in Spanish for the purpose of promoting multilingualism in the UN.

Work Location Addis Ababa

Expected duration - 1st term 12 weeks from Jan - April 2022 - 2nd term 12 weeks from Apr – Jul 2022 - 3rd term 12 weeks from Sep - Dec 2022

Duties and Responsibilities This position is located in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Division of Administration, Human Resources Services Section, Organization Development Unit (DOA/HRSS/ODU).

The duties of the Spanish Language Teacher are to promote multilingualism and to help staff develop more effective work-related communication skills in Spanish. These duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaching Spanish as a foreign language course (all levels, all skills) and specialized high-level communication skills courses to both native and non-native speakers. Course participants include staff in the United Nations Secretariat and related agencies; and diplomats and staff from the country missions to the United Nations.
  • Developing and/or teaching face-to-face, blended, online Spanish regular and communications skills courses.
  • Developing and updating course curricula, materials and assessments (exams, continuous assessment tasks, etc.), and correcting student homework.
  • Designing and delivering communication skills courses tailored to the specific needs of United Nations offices, departments and agencies.
  • Meeting with students to advise and provide individualized feedback. •Performing other duties as required, including corresponding with students, maintaining attendance and grading records and other administrative tasks.
  • Performing other duties as required, including corresponding with students, maintaining attendance and grading records and other administrative tasks, planning and preparing schemes of work at the beginning of the term, assisting the Coordinator to assess and classify new students according to levels through oral and written placement tests; evaluating training materials at the end of each term; preparing and assisting in refining, up-dating and completing pedagogical materials; Helping to improve the efficiency of the Language Training Programme through active participation and contribution as a Language Teacher to the overall conduct and delivery of the programme and Using the Internet and other electronic media to offer up-to-date and high quality instruction.

Degrees should come from a university or equivalent institution. Degrees with special emphasis on the theory and practice of teaching Spanish as a second or foreign language to adult learners are desirable Experience: A minimum of five years of experience, either full-time or part-time, teaching Spanish as a foreign or second language to adults in a multi-cultural setting (corporate, academic or other professional setting), is required. Of these, at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, and/or teacher training for adults learning Spanish, is desirable.

Experience with word-processing programmes is required. Experience with a variety of web 2.0 tools, such as learning management systems and MOOCs (e.g., Moodle, Canvas); online collaboration tools (e.g., Google Drive and Hangouts, WebEx) and social media platforms to teach Spanish as a foreign language is desirable. Experience at an international level in a multicultural environment is desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
