SCOPE OF WORK: Reception and Placement interns work alongside Caseworkers in order to help in some of the most crucial areas of refugee resettlement work. Interns assist with core services, including applying for and enrolling clients in social service programs, school enrollment, medical assistance, apartment set-up, and other case management-related tasks.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Gain expertise in reception and placement case management. - Experience with grant reporting and demonstrating qualitative/quantitative success of programs to funders. - Insight into the economic and cultural hurdles refugees, asylees, and other community members face. - Fluency in engaging with clients in both a case management and counseling role.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Shadow a caseworker at the start of the internship on the following new arrival services: airport pick up, home safety orientation, grocery shopping, applying for social security care, applying for public services, activating EBT card, lease signing, setting up utilities, office intake, bus orientations, paying bills, etc. - Assist with Core Services: airport pick-up, cultural orientation, and transportation to appointments. - Assist the Casework team with needs assessment, service plan, and home visits. - Assist with referrals and connecting refugee clients to community services. - Assist with files, case notes, data entry, and participation in staff meetings.

Qualifications - Fluency in Spanish is required. - Available to meet in person at our Los Angeles office in Glendale on Mondays or Fridays. - Educational background in social work or equivalent work experience serving low-to-moderate income immigrant populations (including refugees, asylum seekers, etc.) and/or teaching financial literacy preferred. - Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and manage multiple tasks; - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to make presentations. - IRC orientation and full background check (Live Scan & HireRight) are required. - Engaged in learning about the broader IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts. - Willing to adhere to IRC intern and workplace policies.
