BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest provider of humanitarian food assistance. On average, WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in 82 countries each year Around 14,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

ShareTheMeal is developed as the first pilot project of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, part of the Innovation and Knowledge Management Division, which aims to combine start-up lean thinking with non-profit projects to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition.

The ShareTheMeal app was launched in 2015 and has been downloaded by ca. 3,000,000 people. Key markets are the US, Germany, UAE and select other markets. The team is focused on further developing the app to include new and innovative features, increasing the engagement of existing users and growing the user base as well as building strategic partnerships with tech companies and startups.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant, reporting to the Head of ShareTheMeal, is expected to:

  1. Develop with the Head of ShareTheMeal the overall strategy and prioritization for ShareTheMeal
  2. Lead all activities related to content and CRM for ShareTheMeal platforms
    1. Oversee the development of a content, a social media and a CRM strategy
    2. Ensure stable processes and standards for the day-to-day creation and implementation of content across all platforms
    3. Manage and develop the Content Strategist and Content Editors as well as the CRM Manager
  3. Lead all activities related to ShareTheMeal operations
    1. Assume day-to-day responsibility for the budget allocated to ShareTheMeal in line with WFP rules and regulations
    2. Work closely with WFP’s Supply Chain Division to ensure goods and services are procured in a timely and efficient manner
    3. Ensure adequate security measures are implemented, in line with WFP policies and in close collaboration with WFP’s Berlin Office
    4. Work with management and the team to establish a productive working environment
    5. Manage the Operations Manager as well as other team members supporting operations
  4. Lead all activities related to HR within the ShareTheMeal team

    1. Implement key activities to ensure that ShareTheMeal has a world-class team, from hiring to retention of talents
    2. Manage the People Operations Manager as well as other team members
  5. Act as Officer-in­-Charge during absences of the Head of ShareTheMeal

  6. Support the Head of the Innovation Accelerator and Director INK with other innovation support as required:
    1. Assess learnings from ShareTheMeal and other mobile innovations
    2. Gather best-practice learnings on mobile innovations and their relevance for WFP
    3. Continually scan developing tech environment for shifts in trends in mobile technologies and assess their applicability for WFP

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  • Agreed workplans for and management of the Operations & Content team
  • Successful talent acquisition and retention of the existing team, ensuring together with other members of the management team that employee engagement develops positively
  • A CRM strategy for ShareTheMeal, focusing on automation and personalization
  • A content strategy covering app, email and social media, working with CAM and STM Head of Marketing
  • Optimization of various operational topics such as finance, payment, procurement, customer support and legal topics

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Master’s degree

Experience:

At least 6 years of progressively responsible national or international experience; prior experience in an operations and/or communications role is essential; experience in a UN organization is an advantage

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative

    • Ability to produce high-quality written materials
    • Proven track record in managing a team, an organizational unit or a project team
    • Collaborative spirit and the ability to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy
    • Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines
    • Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy
    • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the World Food Programme

    Languages:

    In addition to a high proficiency in written and spoken English, knowledge of a second UN language is a plus
