Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Chinese Verbatim Reporting Section, Verbatim Reporting Service, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) in New York. The Verbatim Reporting Service prepares and processes the verbatim records of the meetings of the General Assembly, the Security Council and other bodies entitled to them. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Chinese Verbatim Reporting Section.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Senior Reviser/Verbatim Reporter, Chinese Verbatim Reporting will be responsible for the following duties:

•Revises in extenso verbatim records of meetings dealing with subjects of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature. •Translates texts of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature, as required. •Ensures conformity of the revised verbatim record with the original and/or other language versions and with the United Nations established practice. Reviews the final compiled revised record for quality control. •Assists in reviewing the English text transcribed and edited from interpretation against the text of delivery in the original language, as required. •Directs the conduct of terminological research within the verbatim reporting Section concerned. Assists the Chief of Section in the preparation of terminology materials to meet the needs of the section concerned. •Counsels and assists Verbatim Revisers and Reporters, as required, at and away from Headquarters (off-site) in addition to performing all or some of their functions. Reports to Chief of Section on the quality of the work of Verbatim Revisers and Reporters at and away from Headquarters (off-site). Assists the Chief of Section in monitoring the quality of in-house and contractual translations. •Assists the Chief of Section with work programming for the Section and with the preparation of instructions. •Trains junior language staff. •Assists the Chief of Section in selecting texts for United Nations competitive examinations, in marking candidates’ scripts and in evaluating results, as required. •Serves as deputy to the Chief of Section and acts as officer-in-charge in the Chief’s absence. •Performs other related duties, as required.

Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.

Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in Chinese or relevant United Nations language competitive examinations in Chinese held before 2017.

Work Experience A minimum of ten years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, copy preparing, proofreading, production editing or verbatim reporting and revision of verbatim records is required.

Experience in verbatim reporting and revision of verbatim records is desirable.

Languages Fluency in Chinese, which must be the candidate’s main language, fluency in English, and knowledge of one other UN official language are required.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
