This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days/month in the office. You can be based in our office in Washington DC, London, The Hague, Sao Paulo, Bogota or Mexico City. About the Program:

The Data Lab is WRI’s core data innovation and delivery unit. We are a team of over 35 engineers, product managers, and data scientists with deep experience setting data strategy, doing quantitative research, and building data tools and products. Our mission is to use advances in data and technology to help our community improve lives, protect nature, and ensure just transitions.

The Land & Carbon Lab (LCL) is WRI’s premier hub for geospatial data, analysis, and monitoring of the world’s land and its natural ecosystems. We develop breakthroughs in geospatial monitoring to help governments, businesses, and communities power solutions for sustainable landscapes worldwide.

Job Highlight:

Reporting to LCL’s Product Strategist as your anchor manager and the Director of Land & Carbon Lab as your outcomes manager, you will play a hands-on role defining and then overseeing the development and operation of the world’s first large language model (LLM)-enabled land-based carbon monitoring system. Potential product functionality includes chat-based agents that query geospatial data, drive map interaction, and help users interpret geospatial data. You will lead the product team to define and run experiments, build prototypes, and iteratively determine requirements for the production-ready product. You will oversee all aspects of the product development process, including design, testing, user research, development, and owning the product roadmap.

You will be supported by LCL’s Product Strategist, the Product Engineer Lead, a team of engineers, UX/UI designers and user researchers, program staff, and GIS support as required. You will also work alongside and manage vendors.

What will you do:

Develop and execute the product strategy (30%): -

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to define product vision, goals, and roadmap
  • Define and help run experiments to test feasibility of opportunities
  • Define and help build prototypes of possible LLM-powered applications for LCL data, and test prototypes with users
  • Develop and maintain product backlog, prioritize features, assess tradeoffs, and ensure alignment with strategy
  • Create and present product requirements and updates to various stakeholders
  • Stay informed about emergent trends in AI/LLM technology to identify risks and opportunities which inform product strategy

Manage the product life cycle (50%): -

  • Define and manage product requirements and timelines, ensuring all necessary stakeholders and aware of and aligned to product goals
  • Coordinate and communicate with cross functional teams (i.e., engineering, research etc.) to ensure timely delivery of product features and support
  • Oversee quantitative and qualitative feedback collection to inform ongoing product needs and optimization
  • Manage vendor procurement for product development
  • Maintain and oversee updates of product processes for data updates, releases, testing, and documentation of key decisions as they relate to product growth
  • Create and maintain the product roadmap

Drive user engagement (20%): -

  • Implement tools and processes to measure and track product usage, performance, and user satisfaction and use this data to inform decisions on future enhancements.
  • Monitor and analyze product usage and user feedback to continuously improve the product experience and user retention.
  • Collaborate with engagement and communications teams to disseminate key product updates.

What will you need:-

  • Education: You have completed a bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Experience: You have a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in digital product development related to geospatial data.
  • Background in coding, ideally in languages that facilitate prototyping (JavaScript, Next.js/React, experience with Python also a plus)
  • Strong interest in and familiarity with geospatial data
  • Strong interest in and familiarity with large language models (LLMs) and emerging technologies
  • Experience presenting to and collaborating with cross functional groups.
  • Experience prioritizing product development and leading sprint planning sessions.
  • Experience in agile product development including scrum and the associated processes and tools.
  • Experience working with geospatial data
  • Familiar with climate and sustainability challenges
  • Languages: English required, Spanish or Portuguese are a plus
  • Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position is based. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization

Potential Salary: US salary range is between 116K and 125K USD. UK: 53K - 67K GBP. Netherlands: 67K – 84K EUR. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
