Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs.

The post is located in the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Unit within Central Service at the UNGSC in Brindisi.

The Senior Occupational Safety Assistant will report to the Chief OSH Unit.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief OSH Unit with the technical coordination of the Field Occupational Safety Officer/Programme Manager, United Nations Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH)/New York, the Senior Occupational Safety Assistant will provide substantial Field Occupational Safety Risk Management (FOSRM) programme and field support services to the Department of Operational Support (DOS) and UNGSC as required.

The incumbent will support occupational safety – technical, operational, administrative and data management- for both UNGSC locations (Brindisi and Valencia) as well as for other entities under DOS, including the following duties:

-Makes recommendations to the UNGSC and the DHMOSH Field Safety Officer-Programme Manager UNHQ/NY on the efficient employment of resources, equipment, safety technical protocols and staff safety procedures including areas for improvement. -Assists and advises Occupational Safety Focal Points and Occupational Safety Officers, and staff at large in the performance of his/her occupational safety responsibilities and in all aspects of the DOS Field Occupational Safety Risk Management (FOSRM) Programme and its safety technical applications. -Develops and keeps up-to-date missions’ guidelines, SOP’s, standards and tools in operational and technical support aspects of occupational safety. -Provides support to all occupational safety related staff or staff at large in producing the Incident Report, as requested. -Works in close cooperation with the UNGSC Chief Security Officer (CSO) and the Security Section on cross-cutting safety related matters in order to harmonies and standardize safety risk management operations, processes, procedures and programmes. -Receives, reviews and records the Field Occupational Safety (FOS) Incidents Reports from Field Missions and the UNGSC. -Updates and maintains the FOS Incident database (including filing of hard copies). -Performs FOS incident statistical analysis and produces monthly FOS data statistical reports (facts and figures, charts, graphs, etc.) and presentations upon request. -Develops and maintains the FOS SharePoint page and social networks FOS pages. -Supports to the FOS Focal Points and Field Safety Officers in on-site surveys and participates in Field Occupational Safety Support Assistance Missions (FOSAM) – requested by field missions or other DOS duty stations. -Prepares, update and manages collection processes of workplace checklists for the field supervisors used for hazards identification and in conjunction with Occupational Safety Risk Assessments (O-SRA). -Organizes and delivers Occupational Safety Risk Management Training Courses to Occupational Safety Focal Points, Occupational Safety Officers, Supervisors, and DOS/DPO personnel annually at the UNLB/GSC Training Conference and Learning Centre, to include field missions, upon request. -Ensures that FOSRM programme support items are dealt with in a timely and efficient manner. -Maintains a journal of potential FOSRM lessons learned issues. -Participates at annual consultations and meetings with the FOS Programme Manager DHMOSH at HQ/NY (or elsewhere) on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). -Undertakes other FOS programme support services and tasks as requested or required by the Field Safety Officer/Programme manager UNHQ/NY. -Supervises and oversees the work performed by other Occupational Safety personnel, assistants and Occupational Safety Focal Points at the UNGSC. -Carries out other duties as assigned by the Chief OSH Unit.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification A technical or vocational certificate in Occupational Safety released by accredited recognized international Organization, training institution, academy or provider which specializes in Occupational Safety is required.

Work Experience Minimum ten (10) years of experience in Occupational Safety, Safety Risk Management or a related risk management field.

Experience in statistical collection, collation, elaboration, analysis and database management is desirable.

Experience in the UN or similar international organizations is desirable.

Experience in development and delivery of occupational safety training programmes is desirable.

Experience in adopting the United States of America OSHA safety and health or equivalent OSH standards is desirable.

Languages Language: English and French are the working languages if the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English, (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Italian is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice This position is temporarily available until 26 December 2022. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment. While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
