Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information & Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.

This position is located in the Occupational Safety and Health Unit within the Central Service. The incumbent reports medically/technically to the Head Nurse, Medical Services Division, and/or the Senior Medical Officer; and administratively to the Chief of Unit, Occupational Safety and Health.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Senior Nurse will be responsible for the following duties:

Clinical Duties: - Responds to emergency calls, provides emergency care; ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate; documents case findings. - Performs point of care diagnostic and screening tests as required. - Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated. - Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccines, instructions on malaria prophylaxis, prevention and other travel-related conditions. - Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis, prevention and other travel-related conditions - Provides health education and organizes and delivers health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.

Occupational Health duties: - Undertake surveillance and assessments for preventable health and safety hazards in the work environment, including assessment of health and safety risks using accepted UN methodologies; - Providing occupational health and safety training and capacity development; - Contribute to the Emergency planning and preparedness with a specific focus on responders’ safety and health.

Medico-administrative duties: - Serve as Head Nurse in all of her/his activities as required. - In a timely manner, prepares accident reports and fills out Headquarters' forms to ensure proper submission of the claims to ABCC under Appendix D to Staff Rules. - Trains medical and other UN staff in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. - Ensures proper filing of medical and other records, updates medical databases. - Evaluates, orders and maintains an efficient inventory and stock control of medications/vaccines and other medical supplies and equipment.

Supervisory Duties: - Assumes any delegated supervisory and medico-administrative duties of the Head Nurse as required.

General: - Performs other related duties as required.

Competencies Professionalism: In depth knowledge of emergency , occupational Health and travel nursing. Formal training in advanced life support preferably ACLS/ALS, PHTLS or equivalent emergency medical care/response courses. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Education Registered Professional Nurse with a university degree (B.S., Diploma or equivalent) in nursing is required.

Job - Specific Qualification National registration and license are required.

Recognized qualification(s) in occupational health and/or safety is desirable.

Formal training in advanced life support preferably ACLS/ALS, PHTLS or equivalent emergency medical care/response courses is desirable.

Work Experience A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in nursing is required.

Experience in emergency care, occupational health and travel medicine is desirable.

A minimum of five (05) years of experience in occupational safety and health, environmental health, workplace safety or risk sciences or related areas is desirable.

Experience (at least 3 years) in a position of Head nurse is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat. Having passed the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) in English at Headquarters, ECA, ESCWA, UNOG, UNOV, ICTR, or ICTY may be recognized in place of the GGST, pending confirmation of validity.
