Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located at Headquarters in the Spanish Interpretation Section, Interpretation Service, Department for General Assembly and Conference Services (DGACM). Under the general supervision of the Chief of Interpretation Service, the incumbent will provide interpretation for all inter-governmental and other meetings at the United Nations.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Senior Interpreter (Spanish) will be responsible for the following duties: Provide interpretation, as required, into Spanish of speeches or statements delivered in English or French. Service up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various United Nations bodies to which the service is provided. Routinely cover sensitive and highly technical meetings. Routinely function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting. Assist the Chief of Section or Service, as appropriate, in the screening, training and examining of prospective interpreters. Serve as Week-end Duty Officer for the Interpretation Service and as Chief Interpreter on missions. Serve as Chief of the Spanish Interpretation Section. Conduct performance evaluations as First Reporting Officer (FRO) for staff in the Spanish Interpretation Section. Monitor and assess performance of new temporary staff, prepare annual performance evaluations. Instruct and advise interpreter trainees. Manage and organize internships and liaise with interpretation training institutions. Provide guidance and instructions to trainee interpreters and coaching to junior staff members. Assist in the preparation of training and/or examination material upon request of the Chief of Section. Organize accreditation (GLR) tests and Competitive Examinations, as required. May perform other related duties, as required.

Education

A first level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status, preferably a recognized school of interpreting. A Master's degree is desirable. Must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Spanish Interpreters.

Job - Specific Qualification

Candidates for this position are required to have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Spanish Interpreters.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten (10) years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations, of which at least five (5) years working within the United Nations system or similar international organization is required. Relevant language experience within the United Nations System is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages in the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, a perfect command of Spanish, normally expected to be the incumbent's main language, is required. Excellent command of English and French is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is considered desirable. NOTE: "Perfect command" equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "excellent aural comprehension" equals a rating of "confident or fluent" in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
