Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Interpretation Section (IS), Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will report to the Chief, Interpretation Section.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Senior Interpreter (Spanish) will be responsible for the following specific duties:

  • Provide interpretation into Spanish of speeches and statements given in English and French.
  • Service up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of the United Nations and other international organizations to which the service is provided.
  • Serve as Chief of the Booth, and as Chief Interpreter on missions.
  • Routinely cover sensitive and highly technical meetings.
  • Routinely function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.
  • Provide screening, training and examining of prospective interpreters.
  • Conduct performance evaluations as First Reporting Officer (FRO) for staff in the Spanish booth; monitor and assess performance of new temporary staff, prepare annual performance evaluations.
  • Manage and organise internships and liaise with interpretation training institutions.
  • Provide guidance and instructions to trainee interpreters and coaching to junior staff members.
  • Assist in the preparation of training and/or examination material upon request of the Chief of Section; organize accreditation (GLR) tests and Competitive Examinations as required.
  • Serve as Officer-in-Charge of the Interpretation Section, as required.
  • Perform Programming Officer functions, as required.
  • Perform other work-related duties, as required.

    Education A first level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status, preferably a recognized school of interpreting. A Master’s degree is desirable. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Spanish Interpreters.

    Work Experience A minimum of ten years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required.

    Relevant language experience within the United Nations System is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages in the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, a perfect command of Spanish, normally expected to be the incumbent’s main language, is required. Excellent command of English and/or French, is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is considered desirable.

NOTE: "Perfect command" equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "excellent aural comprehension" equals a rating of "confident or fluent" in two of the four areas.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.
