Result of Service UNEP’s communication strategy is implemented in Europe. UNEP’s work and campaigns are promoted, projects in the region are supported, communication products are produced and disseminated, the regional social media accounts are fed, and the website is updated. Communication support is provided to UNEP senior managers in the region. Special communication and outreach events or workshops are organised if funds are available.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The UNEP Europe Office’s main goal is to provide guidance to national governments at various levels, and to take part in the dialogue on environmental issues between governmental authorities, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders. We encourage closer cooperation between the main actors in the region, implement projects and provide scientific and legal expertise on challenges facing Europe’s environment.

In coordination with UNEP headquarters, the Communication Unit provides communication and outreach support to the Europe Office’s project and policy work and undertakes awareness-raising initiatives and campaigns, giving Europeans the chance to act towards a greener region while improving the quality of their lives.

The Individual Contractor will temporarily support the work of the regional Communication and will perform the following tasks under the supervision of the Regional Information Officer:

  • Stand in for the Regional Information Officer whenever he is not available.
  • Work in coordination with the different members of the UNEP Europe Office Communication team (in and beyond Geneva).
  • Manage and update the regional website.
  • Be the Publications focal point in the office.
  • Update the regional social media accounts. Take on the daily coordination of content when the person responsible is not available.
  • Produce communication products, including press releases, web stories, social media posts, speaking points, speeches, videos, etc.
  • Participate in meetings with the UNEP Communication Division, the UN Office in Geneva and other partners and stakeholders.
  • Deliver briefings to different stakeholders.
  • Organise special communication or outreach activities and events.
  • Liaise with UNEP programme and project managers, as well as policy officers, to support their communication needs.
  • Liaise with the media and update the media contact lists.
  • Provide communication support to UNEP senior managers in the region.
  • If needed, gather inputs and draft internal communication briefs.

    Qualifications/special skills High school diploma or equivalent with preferred area of studies/trainings in communication. A minimum of seven years of experience in public information, communication, broadcasting or related area is required. Experience drafting and editing talking points, speeches, press releases, social media posts, web stories, etc. is required. Experience in managing social media accounts is required. Experience managing websites is desirable. Experience gathering and drafting internal communication briefs is desirable. Experience recording and editing videos or audio podcasts and taking and editing photos is an advantage.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
