Org. Setting and Reporting The Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system, ensure the maximum security for staff and eligible dependents, as well as enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations System.

This position is located in the Security and Safety Section, Bangkok under the Department of Safety and Security. The incumbent reports to the Security Sergeant or supervising officer.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Security Sergeant, and overall supervision of the Chief, Security and Safety Section, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:

1. Provides security coverage of entry points throughout the United Nations complex to preserve entry to unauthorized persons and the unauthorized removal of UN property. 2. Screens all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the premises including clearance through metal detector; checks packages, both visually and by use of x-ray equipment; identifies and retains custody of weapons entering the premises with the authority to either confiscate or return said weapons upon owners' exit from the premises. 3. Conducts exterior, garage, garden and watch-tour patrols throughout the compound for the purpose of intercepting unauthorized persons attempting to gain entry to the premises, reporting all security, fire and safety violations to the Security Control Centre. 4. Provides information and direction to all persons associated with the organization. 5. Controls, identifies and clears pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering and exiting the premises; maintains logbooks and records, as required. 6. Maintains alertness for any potential or actual breaches of security and any disturbances or unusual activity; and reports these immediately. 7. Ensures that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation. 8. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Passing the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT) is required for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the Department of Safety and Security, Bangkok. Applicants who have not passed the SOT at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. The SOT will be administered locally only at the ESCAP office located in Bangkok, Thailand. Any candidates invited to take the test will be responsible for their own travel and staying expenses.

Work Experience A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement or military police or security field, or a first level university degree in criminal justice, security management or any other relevant area, with a minimum of 18 months experience in the security field is required.

Experience in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Qualified applicants may be evaluated through a competency-based interview and/or other assessment methods.

Special Notice This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. This is a temporary position and will be available until 30 August 2022. If selected, an internal candidate will be on temporary assignment to the post; an external candidate will initially be offered a temporary appointment. Normally the incumbent will be required to perform duties in UN Security uniform and, at times, in civilian clothes. Candidate must be physically and mentally fit. Duties may require long periods of standing. The officer is required to obtain and maintain appropriate host country licenses, including, but mot limited to pistol and vehicle operator licenses. Officers are also required to undergo firearms drills and maintain UN qualification standards. Incumbents may be required to work shifts/ weekends/ overnights/ holidays.
