The Corporate Services and Facilities Department (CSF) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking to fill the position of Section Chief of the English Section in Language Services.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Head of Language Services and the Chief Translator, the English Section Chief manages a section that provides translation and related services into English, as well as from English into a range of languages other than United Nations languages.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, supervise, and coordinate the Section’s activities, including translation, revision, review, and proofreading, as necessary to produce high-quality translations.
  • Supervise, motivate, evaluate, and assess performance of Section staff.
  • Assign work and establish priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Perform translation, revision, and Machine Translation Post Editing, as necessary.
  • Determine resource needs and participate in the recruitment of regular and contractual staff. Identify and recruit freelance translators as needed.
  • Act as authority on language in the Section, including terminology.
  • Ensure that appropriate quality control measures are established and applied.
  • Engage with IMF Departments and Offices to address translation-related issues.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of current language software systems. Assess future language technology and training needs and formulate related strategies.

Qualifications

Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of a relevant advanced university degree, supplemented by a minimum of eight (8) years of professional work experience in translation and revision of economic, financial, legal, and statistical material, or equivalent. Experience of working in international institutions and familiarity with different areas of language operations will be considered an asset.

Target language: English. High level of written and spoken proficiency in English as a native language. Source languages: French and Spanish, Portuguese a plus. Ability to translate and revise translations from all three languages will be considered an asset.

Excellent organizational and management abilities. Strong interpersonal and communications skills; ability to inspire, lead and work as part of a team. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and officials at all levels in a multicultural environment.

Substantial proven experience in translating and revising documents related to IMF activities or similar subject matter, as well as in coaching translators and evaluating their work.

High level of competence in an automated environment using computer-assisted translation (CAT) and other language technology tools, and translation management systems (TMS) for translation, revision, and administrative and supervisory functions. Deep understanding of language systems and ability to advise on language systems' functionality and developments.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to take translation/revision test and will be invited to an interview.

This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund’s new employment rules that took effect on May 1, 2015.
