PURPOSE OF POSITION

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), is the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) and is based in Lyon, France.

Under the direct supervision of head of Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology “ENV” unit and overall guidance of IARC director, the incumbent will coordinate with internal and external counterparts including other technical units and Constances National Cohort Study in France and the Nationale Kohortenstudie in Germany through the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).

The position will assist in the launch of a prospective cohort study to investigate whether having tattoos increases the risk of developing certain cancers.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  1. Coordinate between ENV and the collaborators from the Constances National Cohort Study in France to launch the sub-cohort to study cancer outcomes in tattooed individuals (the “CRABAT” study):

  2. Liaise with the Constances National Cohort Study led by the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research “INSERM” to develop the study protocol and documents for obtaining permissions (ethics, data protection, etc.), as well as data sharing interfaces.

  3. Develop exposure assessment tools for assessing tattoos exposure and information to be used for the tattooed members of the Constances cohort study.
  4. Monitor the conduct of fieldwork in terms of quality and completeness, and check plausibility of incoming data of the project.

  5. Coordinate between ENV and the Nationale Kohortenstudie in Germany (through the DKFZ):

  6. Liaise with the Nationale Kohortenstudie through partnership with the DKFZ to adapt the CRABAT study protocol to the situation in Germany, including the adapted version of the study protocol, documents needed for permissions, and data interfaces

  7. Tailoring the French questionnaire to the situation in Germany
  8. Assist in launching and monitoring the CRABAT study in Germany.

  9. Assist in analysis of other ongoing studies in ENV to develop the scientific manuscript writing skills.

  10. Contribute to the analysis of the African Breast Cancer Disparities in Outcomes Study and write scientific manuscript on the assigned topic(s).

COVID-19 MEASURES

Due to the evolving situation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, and depending on work requirements, this position may be partly occupied remotely, from the home of the candidate selected in the region Lyon, according to the teleworking clause for force majeure currently in force as part of the IARC teleworking policy during this pandemic period.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Essential: PhD in Epidemiology, or any other closely related discipline.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • At least one year of post-doctoral experience in cancer epidemiology.
  • Experience using statistical analysis packages for epidemiological research (e.g., R, Stata)
  • Proven hands-on expertise in tattoos chemical inks

USE OF LANGUAGE SKILLS

Excellent knowledge of English, French and German is essential.

SKILLS

Essential:

  • Expert theoretical and practical epidemiology research analytical skills using statistical techniques.
  • Effective communication with internal and external counterparts.
  • Proven ability to draft scientific manuscripts.
  • Familiarity with donor relations and the preparation of grant applications/agreements.
  • Mastery knowledge of statistical software such as Stata, R, etc

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 38,172 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1,329 per month for the duty station indicated above (subject to change). Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
