Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Chinese Translation and Text Processing Section (CTTS) of the Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will be working under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Section.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: - Translate, mostly without revision, texts submitted mainly by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and other entities as required. - Revise translations covering subjects dealt with by the above-mentioned bodies and organizations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency in scientific, technical and legal matters. - Meet the established workload and quality standards. - Develop new terminology for use where none exists in the target language; carry out linguistic research and participate in the preparation of online terminology records and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools. - Coach and assist junior translators, give them feedback on their work and brief them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology and a number of subjects, as required. - Participate in drafting or consistency groups. - Supervise the work of small groups of translators during meetings by acting as focal point for meetings, including during early and night shifts. - Perform quality control (QC) of outsourced documents. - Perform other work related duties as required.

Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status.

Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in Chinese or any United Nations language competitive examination in Chinese held before 2017.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing is required. Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required. Three years of experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable. Experience working within the United Nations or a similar international organization is highly desirable. Out of the afore-mentioned experience, a minimum of three years of revision experience is desirable. Scientific, technical or legal studies and/or experience with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations will be considered an asset.

Languages Fluency in Chinese, which must be the candidate's main language.

Chinese translators must also have knowledge of English and, preferably, of one other official United Nations language, as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.
