The Reporting Specialist can expect a peaceful lifestyle. Services and infrastructure have been upgraded in recent times. The health system in the country is primarily public, however, over the past decade the private medical sector has seen a steady improvement. The main medical problems facing the public health sector are malaria, tuberculosis, dysentery, and childbirth complications. There are three international schools in the capital city of Nouakchott: the French School, the American International School, and the TLC International School. Located between the Sahara and the Sahel, Mauritania has experienced recurrent shocks in recent decades, including drought and the impact of the crisis in Mali, resulting in population movements and intense urbanization. The population is estimated at about 3.8 million, mainly concentrated in the capital, Nouakchott (26 per cent), and in the southern part of the country. Urbanization has placed significant pressure on social services and weakened traditional social protection mechanisms, which has had an impact on children's rights. Although the country has experienced sustained economic growth in recent years, contributing to its transition to lower middle-income status, the increase in wealth has not been equitably distributed or adequately reflected in national budget allocations to the social sectors. Children and adolescents in Mauritania remain exposed to various forms of violence, exploitation, and abuse in an environment that lacks effective institutional child protection mechanisms.
