Overview

Support recovery efforts related to Cyclone Ditwah through report writing and analysis.

You have:

• Proven experience in report writing, including situation analyses, assessments, or project-related reports.
• Experience in health, environment, education or WASH related fields.
• Strong command of English with excellent writing skills and thorough knowledge of grammatical and stylistic rules.
• Proficiency in Sinhala and/or Tamil, with the ability to understand language nuances and source materials, is required.
• Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear, structured, and evidence-based reports.
• Familiarity with UN, government, or development-sector terminology, policies, and reporting standards is an advantage.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy, consistency, and clarity in written outputs.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate remotely with international and national teams.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Experience working on humanitarian, development, or large-scale programme reports is desirable.

The post–Cyclone Ditwah response in Sri Lanka aims to support recovery efforts for affected communities, with UNRCO playing a central role in ensuring coordinated engagement with government counterparts, development partners, and other stakeholders. This online volunteering assignment contributes to SDG 17 by strengthening evidence-based reporting and knowledge products that support joint humanitarian response, programme planning, and decision-making. Volunteers will support UNRCO by drafting situation analyses and other project-related reports related to the Cyclone Ditwah response, in line with UN reporting standards and communication guidelines.

The Humanitarian Priorities Plan (HPP), implemented under the guidance of the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) and supported by the Inter-Sector Coordination Group (ISCG), focuses on lifesaving and time-critical interventions for vulnerable populations. The HCT, re-activated specifically for the Cyclone Ditwah response, comprises heads or deputies of humanitarian UN agencies and national and international civil society organizations, coordinating efforts to assist approximately 658,370 people between December 2025 and April 2026.

Selected Online Volunteers will support UN Communications Team by preparing situation analyses and other project-related reports linked to post–Cyclone Ditwah response, recovery, and climate action initiatives. Online Volunteers will contribute to drafting high-quality written documents to support programme planning, decision-making, coordination, and reporting processes.

The Online Volunteer will receive relevant background materials, data inputs, and guidance on target audiences, organizational guidelines, and reporting directives. Responsibilities include synthesizing information from multiple sources, drafting clear and evidence-based reports, and ensuring accuracy, coherence, and consistency with UN standards.

Online Volunteers will coordinate remotely with the UN Communications Teams to receive feedback, incorporate comments and revisions, and ensure the timely submission of finalized deliverables. - One volunteer will support in drafting brief situation analyses and project-related reports linked to post–Cyclone Ditwah response, recovery, and climate action initiatives. - One volunteer will support in collecting and synthesize information from multiple sources (background materials, data inputs, partner inputs) into clear, structured, and evidence-based written outputs.

Both Online Volunteers will also be asked to: - Ensure all written outputs are high quality, accurate, coherent, and aligned with UN editorial standards, organizational guidelines, and agreed reporting formats. - Adapt content to identified target audiences as guided by the UNRCO team. - Coordinate remotely and regularly with UN project and communications teams to receive guidance, feedback, and incorporate revisions, and deliver finalized drafts within agreed timelines.

The candidate should have:

• At least 5 years of proven experience in report writing, including situation analyses, assessments, or project-related reports.
• Strong command of English with excellent writing skills and thorough knowledge of grammatical and stylistic rules.
• Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear, structured, and evidence-based reports.
• Familiarity with UN, government, or development-sector terminology, policies, and reporting standards.
