Overview

Conduct satellite data analysis to address methane emissions.

You have:

  • Master Degree in engineering, remote sensing, or equivalent.
  • Strong experience in the processing and interpretation of data from methane-sensitive satellite missions.
  • Proficiency in the use of GIS and other remote sensing data visualization and analysis platforms.
  • Strong skills in geospatial analysis.
  • Knowledge about environmental issues associated with the oil and gas industry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific data in an advocacy setting.
  • Demonstrated scientific expertise including scholarly publications.
  • Fluency in oral and written English.
  • Additional languages are an asset.

Result of Service Research and analysis of satellite data to detect methane emissions from anthropogenic sources with a focus on oil/gas infrastructure

Duties and Responsibilities UN Environment Programme (Energy and Climate Branch) implements the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), a data-driven, action-focused UNEP initiative that takes an innovative approach to address the methane emissions problem by collecting, integrating, and reconciling data from different sources, including scientific measurement studies, satellites, rigorous industry reporting.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Master Degree in engineering, remote sensing, or equivalent Experience: 1. Strong experience in the processing and interpretation of data from methane-sensitive satellite missions, and in particular from high resolution point-source imagers (GHSat, PRISMA, Sentinel-2, ...). 2. Proficiency in the use of GIS and other remote sensing data visualization and analysis platforms. 3. Strong skills in geospatial analysis. 4. Knowledge about environmental issues associated with the oil and gas industry, especially air emissions; familiarity with emission inventories is a plus. 5. Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications and/or involvement in scientific panels. 6. Excellent written and oral communication skills. 7. Initiates and maintains extensive contacts within the scientific community. 8. Ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific data in an advocacy setting and for non-scientific populations. 9. Exceptional personal organization and attention to detail; ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, geographically dispersed team. 10. Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work. 11. The ability to communicate complex ideas in writing and orally to multiple stakeholders with different levels of expertise, including the public and industry. Language: For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English. Additional languages are an asset.
