  • Minimum 8 years of experience in energy, environment, climate policy, business, finance, international relations, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of methane, industrial decarbonisation, metallurgical coal, steel value chains, or responsible sourcing
  • Track record of engaging companies, investors, governments, industry associations, NGOs, or international organizations
  • Strong communication and engagement expertise with an existing network of stakeholders
  • Knowledge of additional languages including Spanish, Russian, Chinese is an asset

Result of Service

The Industry Engagement Consultant – Steel Methane Programme consultant will develop and implement stakeholder engagement approaches, engaging metallurgical coal producers and steel producers alongside investors to build and grow an industry partnership promoting MRV to drive mitigation. The consultant will develop communications products and plan and deliver outreach activities to promote awareness and uptake of the Steel Methane Partnership, methane transparency, and related MRV framework and deepen engagement with the wider Steel Methane Programme.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the global environmental agenda and advocating for environmental action across the UN system. UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven initiative accelerating reductions in methane emissions, a major contributor to climate change. IMEO provides open, reliable and actionable data to support emissions reductions aligned with the Paris Agreement. IMEO integrates data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national inventories. As a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO helps translate this growing body of evidence into methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. The Industry Engagement Consultant – Steel Methane Programme consultant will engage specific sectors to build collaboration on MRV and mitigation and drive external visibility through events, digital products, and communications. The consultant will report to ​Head of IMEO​.

English is the working language of UNEP's IMEO. Knowledge of additional languages including Spanish, Russian, Chinese is an asset.

OUTCOMES: This includes the following key outcomes: Develop and deliver a strategic stakeholder engagement and prioritization plan, initially focused on priority markets (including but not limited to Australia, China, India, Japan, US). Facilitate engagement and recruitment of metallurgical coal producers, steel companies, investors, and other relevant stakeholders. Promote awareness and uptake of the Steel Methane Partnership, methane transparency, and related MRV framework. Develop and deliver external visibility outputs including webinars, briefings, outreach materials, digital products and coordination with IMEO communications team. OUTPUTS: Develop and deliver a stakeholder mapping and prioritization for key SMP markets (including but not limited to Australia, China, India, Japan, US). Produce steel sector engagement and supply-chain awareness outputs (e.g. reports, presentations or communication materials). Provide investor engagement and stewardship-related products, such as briefings, advisory notes, action plans, etc. Produce promotional materials for the Steel Methane Partnership and related methane transparency objectives. Develop and deliver user needs assessment and improvement plans for digital products in collaboration with data and development teams. Deliver webinars, briefings, meetings, and presentations for outreach activities. Provide SMP-related insights for IMEO communications. Provide strategic advice on stakeholder dynamics, engagement opportunities, and market positioning CONFIDENTIALITY CLAUSE: This includes the following key outcomes: Develop and deliver a strategic stakeholder engagement and prioritization plan, initially focused on priority markets (including but not limited to Australia, China, India, Japan, US).
