Context

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), www.icrc.org, responds to worldwide humanitarian needs through its global network of delegations. The ICRC is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.

The ICRC’s Resource Mobilization Strategy 2020-2030 and its Strategy Implementation Plan (SIP) lay out an ambitious agenda for change, both in the Resource Mobilization Division (REM) and across the ICRC. It aims to expand the scale of funding for the work of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and provides ambitious targets, including for income from the private sector.

This role will be based in the REM Eurasia Region, but will also steward major philanthropic relationships in North America. The REM Eurasia team plays a key role in spearheading the ICRC private fundraising, providing predictable and diversified funding in support of the ICRC’s mandate, while also serving as a testing and learning ground for the implementation of the ICRC’s 2030 Resource Mobilization Strategy. The Eurasia region covers 55 countries and, working in coordination with Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies, typically raises more than CHF 80 million per year.

Purpose

The Philanthropy Specialist enacts the ICRC's private sector engagement strategy, working in collaboration with Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners to secure major donations from private sector entities. The specific portfolio(s) to be managed and developed may range across high value giving to include philanthropic foundations, companies, associations, intermediaries, cantons and municipalities in Switzerland, as well as all types of high value supporters in the US and Canada.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

Strategy and donor portfolio

• Within the scope of the ICRC Resource Mobilization Strategy and in coordination with the PPP Manager, Eurasia,PSE CoE Manager and the PSE Americas team, maintain and develop strong and effective working relationships with relevant RCRC Movement partners to secure increased philanthropic giving to the ICRC and wider Movement. • Pursue a Moves Management approach to analyze, prioritize, develop and deliver engagement plans for key major gift supporters and prospects in the region(s), working with RCRC Movement partners to ensure coherence, realize joint opportunities and ensure long-term financial support.

• Where the potential warrants it, work to acquire and / or steward mid-level givers, encouraging them to grow their support and commitment.

• Where relevant and feasible, and in collaboration with the central prospect research function, help define the profiles and potential of new major supporters and develop and deliver outreach strategies accordingly.

• Plan, request and participate in the development of project proposals adapted to audiences to secure financial contributions. Liaise proactively with colleagues across REM and the wider organization, notably Operations, to interact with high value supporters, convincing them of the humanitarian impact of the ICRC.

• Ensure follow-up steps are taken care of (acknowledgment, follow-up, reporting, accountability etc.) in a timely manner and recorded appropriately in the CRM.

• Where necessary, develop concepts and content for fundraising events, organize, manage and animate such events as relevant.

• Work with ICRC internal resources: field actors, experts, managers, senior leadership or board members as relevant around fundraising relationships, complying with the REM strategy implementation plan.

• Liaise with other REM colleagues to ensure alignment, synergies and effective use of materials, invitations, stewardship events etc.; involve and manage external agencies as necessary.

Data, Forecast and Budget

• Ensure all relevant information is recorded in the CRM, to enable accurate tracking and analysis and ensure efficient stewardship.

• Ensure compliance with data protection laws and guidelines.

• Ensure compliance with due diligence processes.

• Ensure the regular monitoring of results and identification of risks and actions needed to mitigate impact on revenue.

• Contribute to the expected annual income forecast and related acquisition and stewardship expenditures in the budget and contribute to forecast and budget monitoring throughout the year.

• Keep up to date with new fundraising approaches and techniques as well as the results of other organizations. Propose and implement the most relevant ones.

Relationships

• Externally: Interacts with supporters from the private sector as well as with Red Cross Red Crescent Movement fundraising colleagues; with UN and other international NGO representatives, as well as relevant think tanks, academic institutions and other centres of expertise.

• Internally: Interacts in a “networked approach” with the PSE Eurasia and Americas teams, as well as with the REM Centres of Expertise (CoE). Interacts across hierarchies and works with relevant Departments to present the ICRC and wider Movement in a compelling manner to high-level stakeholders, prospects and supporters.

Additional Duties

• The post will involve some work beyond normal working hours, as evening events take place. Travel within Switzerland or in the Eurasia region may be required for personalized relationships.

• Represent the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and during events, and avoid any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC or wider Movement’s image.

• Take responsibility for your own professional learning and development.

Certifications / Education required

• University degree or an equivalent combination of education and / or experience in marketing/business administration, fundraising, communication or international affairs / social sciences. • Fluent in English and French or German (or Swiss-German); other European languages an asset. • Excellent computer proficiency.

Professional Experience required

• Ideally 6-9 years’ overall professional experience, including a significant time in raising major gifts. • Solid understanding of private fundraising principles and approaches and ability to manage a robust account management portfolio. • Experience within the RCRC Movement an asset. • Demonstrated experience in summarizing complex subjects into simple, compelling and actionable concepts and ability to share across a number of audiences. • Experience in developing communication and engagement strategies.

Key Competencies

• Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills. • Very good knowledge of relevant philanthropic environments in Eurasia. • Knowledge of databases and CRM management. • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills. • Committed and highly motivated team player, able to work well under pressure. • Good understanding of current humanitarian issues and priorities. • Perseverance, ability to navigate in a complex institutional set-up. • Experience of budget and forecast planning. • Flexibility, independence and self-motivation. • Passion for humanitarian work and strong commitment to the mission of the ICRC and wider RCRC Movement. • Persuasive negotiating skills and ability to focus on the needs and interest of major gift supporters.
