What we do

As an Associate within our Innovation Team at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), you will be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking team dedicated to fostering improvement for progress through intentional and anticipatory innovation. As part of our overall efforts to help the institution continually evolve, adapt, and anticipate in today’s fast-changing world, your specific role will be to support the overall functioning of the team as well as the implementation of innovative solutions that serve the needs of communities affected by conflict and other situations of violence.

Within the context of our mission to facilitate innovation and create value for our stakeholders – from ICRC staff to affected populations – your position will play a valuable role in supporting innovation initiatives and efforts that are in alignment with and support to our Institutional Strategy.

Your role will also be informed by our purpose, which underscores the importance of intentional and anticipatory innovation in driving organizational evolution and progress. By supporting the Head of Innovation, Innovation Process Manager, and Innovation Officer, as well as our specialists in Foresight & Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence, you will actively contribute to advancing our commitment to innovation excellence while upholding the highest standards of respect, honesty, and transparency.

Moreover, as part of our commitment to holistic growth and continuous development, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the world of the ICRC and broader humanitarian innovation, and to contribute to meaningful pilots that make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence.

Purpose of the position

Your purpose is to provide essential support to our core functions and specialist positions– from conducting research, analysing data, preparing presentations, organizing events, to supporting communications efforts – while learning about humanitarian work and gaining hands-on experience with different innovation applications. Your role will also be pivotal in supporting the implementation of actual innovative pilots and efforts, contributing to the advancement of our organization's mission and vision.

This position is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and field-missions with the ICRC are not possible.

Main duties and responsibilities (1/2)

Assisting the Head of Innovation You will work closely with the Head of Innovation to execute strategic plans and initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of innovation within the organization. This will involve conducting research, preparing presentations, and assisting in the development of innovative solutions.

Supporting the Innovation Process Manager You will collaborate with the Innovation Process Manager to streamline and optimize our innovation processes. This will entail analysing data, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Collaborating with the Innovation Officer You will assist the Innovation Officer in building and engaging our community of innovators. This will involve organizing events, facilitating workshops, and fostering connections with internal and external stakeholders to promote innovation and knowledge sharing.

Assisting the Specialists in Foresight & Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence You will provide support to our specialists in Foresight & Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence by conducting research, collecting data, and assisting in the development and implementation of innovative technologies and methodologies.

Main duties and responsibilities (2/2)

Supporting Communication Efforts You will assist in communication efforts to effectively convey the work and impact of our Innovation Team, both internally and externally. This will involve drafting communication materials and knowledge products, such as newsletters, reports, and social media posts to highlight key achievements, disseminate knowledge, and engage stakeholders.

Contributing to Innovation Pilots You will have the opportunity to actively participate in innovation pilots across various domains and geographies, gaining hands-on experience and insight into the practical application of innovation in humanitarian contexts and programmes.

Learning and Development Throughout your tenure, you will have access to learning and development opportunities aimed at enhancing your understanding of humanitarian innovation and developing your skills and capabilities in this field.

Education required

You have a Bachelor degree in a relevant field such as Business Administration, Innovation Management, Engineering, Social Sciences, or any other relevant discipline. You are also welcome if you are enrolled in post-graduate studies.

Experience required

You should have one to two years of working experience in fields related to project management, innovation, or a closely related area. This could include internships, entry-level positions, or volunteer roles where you have gained exposure to project coordination, research, or innovation processes.

Languages

Your English is at working proficiency level. Knowledge of French or any other language relevant to the regions where ICRC operates would be beneficial but is not required.

Desired profile and skills

  • You possess strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to gather information effectively. This could include experience conducting literature reviews, data analysis, or market research.
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. This includes the ability to convey ideas clearly and effectively, as well as to collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
  • You are proficient with digital tools and platforms commonly used for communication and collaboration. This could include software such as Microsoft Office Suite and communication platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Slack.
  • While not required, familiarity with innovation methodologies such as design thinking, agile, or lean startup would be advantageous. You should demonstrate willingness to learn and apply these methodologies in your work.
  • You will need a strong commitment to humanitarian principles, norms, and values, as well as an understanding of the humanitarian contexts ICRC works.
