Organizational Setting

FAO Afghanistan is investing, across all 34 provinces, in resilience reinforcing actions that focus on protecting agriculture livelihoods and local ecosystems, boosting local production of nutritious foods and cash-incomes, and safeguarding critical agriculture sectoral development gains achieved over the past couple of decades through revitalizing rural markets and economy. In 2022-2023, FAO will, under the life-saving assistance Outcome (1) of the UN Transitional Engagement Framework (TEF), focus on the following four priority actions: (i) Safeguarding Wheat Seed Security, (ii) Enhancing Local Production of Nutritious Food, (iii) Livestock Protection and Dairy Sector Support, and (iv) Restoring Irrigation Structures to Boost Cash Incomes. Additionally, FAO will contribute towards resilience building activities under Outcome 2 of the TEF.

There are a total of eight (8) positions, one position in each duty station: Bamyan, Gardez, Herat, Jalalabad, Kabul, Kandahar, Kunduz, and Mazar-e-Sharif.

Reporting Lines

The Logistics Assistant will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator and the technical supervision of the Head of Logistics.

Technical Focus

Support logistical operations, in the Region, to ensure timely and efficient delivery of goods for the FAO Afghanistan programmes.

Tasks and responsibilities

Depending on the duty station and specific operations to be conducted, the Logistics Assistant may lead and/or contribute to the following duties:

  • Serve as technical focal point on logistics-related operations in the Region;
  • Liaise with the Regional Coordinator and the Head of Logistics to share updated information on logistics operations;
  • Keep a monthly and weekly timeline of ongoing and planned logistics operations in the Region;
  • Organize and schedule daily Logistics operations to support on-time delivery of FAO programmes (suppliers’ delivery, storage capacities, transportation);
  • Be responsible of warehouse’s activities (offloading, receiving, adequate storage according to SOP, shipping and disposal of goods) and report any irregularity (quantity, quality, condition etc.);
  • Liaise with Implementing Partners to track goods until final point of distribution (quantity, quality, timing);
  • Maintain full accurate records for FAO inventory and share the applicable reports as needed or requested;
  • Support the implementation of an inventory management system and fill out the data/information;
  • Liaise with local/regional logistics stakeholders and provide market researches for logistics services (warehouse, transportation, disposal);
  • Monitor the general condition of the logistics assets, oversee and follow-up the needed maintenance;
  • Undertake travel and field missions as required;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree (Bachelor) in Supply Chain Management, Logistics or closely related field;
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in managing logistics, delivery operations or supply chain;
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and the local languages (Pashto and/or Dari);
  • National of Afghanistan.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Relevant experience in warehouse management;
  • Relevant experience in logistics and transportation operations;
  • Capacity to work with partners and find practical solutions with sometime short deadline;
  • Strong data analysis and record keeping skills;
  • Good command of computers, and MS-Office;
  • Familiarity with humanitarian organizations is desirable.
