**OVERVIEW** ------------ Parent Sector : Field Office Duty Station: Montevideo Job Family: Natural Sciences Type of contract : Non Staff Duration of contract : From 1 to 6 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Paris Time) : 21-MAY-2021 UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES** ------------------------------------- **Senior consultant for regional scoping on climate change vulnerability and risk** **in Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks in Latin America and the Caribbean** In 2020, in the framework of UNESCO’s MAB and IGGP Programmes, the Platform for Climate Change, Risk and Resilience in UNESCO Sites in LAC was formed. One of the main deliverables for the Platform’s 2021 workplan, as agreed by its Regional Technical and Scientific Advisory Group, is a regional integrated risk and vulnerability scoping of approximately 8-10 biosphere reserves and 3-4 UNESCO Global Geoparks, based on a socio-ecological approach and inclusive of indigenous peoples and local communities. The consultant will work in collaboration with UNESCO’s Montevideo Office and the Technical and Scientific Advisory Group to: - Identify and define key terms that will be the basis for a common understanding of socio-ecological resilience for the Platform and for LAC’s UNESCO sites; - Identify approximately 20 multisectorial indicators based on existing data for carrying out a regional scoping of around 15 LAC UNESCO sites; - Write a publishable scoping report (100-150 pages) on climate change risk and vulnerability in LAC UNESCO sites with recommendations for the Platform, the IberoMAB Network, the GeoLAC Network and UNESCO. The report should include: - A general analysis - Chapters on priority issues, such as: women, indigenous peoples, threatened/vulnerable species, water security and socio-cultural aspects - A chapter with a “dashboard-style” summary of results on each site - An identification of gaps in available data that should be filled to better understand the vulnerability and risk facing UNESCO sites - Contribute to a methodology toolkit for carrying out risk and vulnerability analysis and adaptation planning at the site level in LAC UNESCO Sites, with an emphasis on knowledge co-production. Estimated duration of the work: 60 working days (approx.) over a period of 6 months.
