Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.

The Radioisotope Products and Radiation Technology Section is responsible for carrying out the IAEA's Radioisotope Production and Radiation Technology Programme and for assisting Member States in capacity building for development, production and quality assurance of reactor and cyclotron based medical isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, as well as the adoption and utilization of radiation technology using gamma radiation, electron beams and X-rays for advanced materials development, remediation of hazardous pollutants and industrial processes.

Main Purpose

As a member of the project management team, led by the Section Head, the Radiation Processing Specialist provides expertise and services in planning and implementing the IAEA's radioisotope production and radiation technology programme aimed at technology support and capacity building in Member States as regards the setting up of irradiation facilities and the application of ionizing radiation in generating value-added products through radiation-driven polymer modifications, minimizing the effects of pollutants in wastewater treatment, sterilization and disinfestation as well as in innovative emerging applications in health care, environment, agriculture and industry.

Role

The Radiation Processing Specialist is: (1) developer and implementer, contributing to the planning and development of the IAEA's programme in radiation technology; (2) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and leading moderately complex Technical Meetings; (3) a mission leader, planning and leading moderately complex review missions; (4) a technical and project officer, evaluating moderately complex technical cooperation (TC) projects, and promoting, coordinating and evaluating moderately complex coordinated research projects (CRPs) for the continuing widespread application of ionizing radiation in various fields.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Provide technical and strategic advice and services to IAEA Member States through the design, technical backstopping and support for the implementation and appraisal of projects aimed at the application of radiation technology. Identify issues in relevant fields which need to be addressed at the international level and plan the appropriate methodologies to enable broad international consensus on the issue. Towards this objective, implement necessary actions as CRPs, evaluate and monitor individual research contracts, organize meetings, conferences and prepare technical reports.
• Plan and lead scientific-technical missions to Member States, including preparatory and follow-up visits, and the assessment of their needs. Provide technical input and coordinate the preparation of mission reports.
• As a contributor to policy development and priority setting in the field of radiation technology, design and conduct analytical studies, participate in advisory committees and task forces, and provide technical input to the policy and standards development of regional and international bodies.
• Evaluate and implement TC projects, develop actions plans, organize and participate in seminars, workshops, conferences, expert missions and training courses.
• Prepare materials for publication as IAEA documents or in relevant scientific journals. Recommend, in conjunction with relevant stakeholders, including IAEA Collaborating Centres, innovative research and development approaches.

• Advanced university degree in radiation chemistry, chemical sciences, material engineering or a related field, with specialization in radiation polymer modification or another relevant subspecialty, such as Radiation Chemistry. PhD would be an asset.
• Minimum seven years of working experience in a relevant field, of which at least three years should have been at the international level in developing, planning, implementing and evaluating projects related to radiation technology with emphases in polymer modifications or Radiation Chemistry.
• Practical international field experience.
• Sound record of publications in the field of radiation technology.
• Experience in managing multidisciplinary staff and implementing radiation technology projects and research.
• Good oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $74913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 34610*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
