The Dominican Republic is a democratic, upper-middle income country. Due to its insular condition and its geographical location, it is very vulnerable to natural disasters, hurricanes, droughts, earthquakes and shocks derived from climate change. It has 10 million inhabitants, 35% of them under 18 years of age. 79% live in urban areas and 21% in rural areas. The country has had a higher economic growth than the region in the last fifteen years (5-7% on average since 2001) but important inequality and exclusion gaps persist. The country has shown good management of the health crisis caused by COVID 19, achieving availability of vaccines for the population over 12 years of age and in recent days it has started vaccination for those over 5 years of age, this has reduced cases of hospitalization and deaths.
