The Division of Public Partnerships (PPD) works to strengthen UNICEF's position as a partner of choice for children's rights among governments and public actors around the world. The division is doing this by connecting UNICEF’s positioning of children in intergovernmental and multilateral fora and negotiations to the engagement with governments and public institutions (including International Financial Institutions) as resource, policy and program partners. A key premise for PPD is that the engagement with countries should be based on multiple levels of partnerships, including around resource mobilization and policy advocacy.

The intern will benefit from robust learning opportunities in supporting the overall work of the team covering the relationship with the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand in building and maintaining good partnership/relationships with the government partners, enhancing the dialogue on issues related to children as well as fostering and developing innovative partnerships. The intern’s primary responsibilities include supporting the New York-based team in reviewing and editing grant materials and reports; engaging with UNICEF country teams to provide related implementation guidance consistent with donor requirements; managing a desk review and analysis of reference documents to draft a summary report highlighting program successes; and assisting with knowledge management. These activities will provide the intern with exposure to critical policy priorities and afford them the opportunity to engage with and learn from a range of internal and external stakeholders, including country offices and donor representatives.

Duration: up to 16 weeks with an expected start date of August 15

Duty Station: UNICEF New York Headquarters (selected candidate will work remotely until further notice).

How can you make a difference?

1. Assist in managing grant reporting requirements to learn more about partner engagement:

• Compiling, reviewing, and editing various documents

• Providing support to the organization of internal consultations, including with UNICEF country office teams, and meetings with partners

• Assisting in the preparation of briefing notes, presentations, and summary of discussions

2. Support the development of a visibility and recognition materials to sharpen analytical and writing skills:

• Researching, compiling, and reviewing various reference documents

• Drafting content for external distribution

3. Meeting and event support to promote best practices in internal customer service and gain direct experience engaging with a range of individuals and organizations:

• Provide support to the planning and organization of briefings, high-level events, and bilateral meetings between UNICEF senior management and Member States officials as needed

• Preparing documents for briefings and meetings

• Assisting in the preparation of briefing notes, presentations and summary of discussions

4. Knowledge management to support operational priorities while applying and developing analytical and organizational skills:

• Update the team SharePoint portal and upload key documents and other material

• Help maintain grant reporting trackers and related process

5. Other tasks to be assigned, as appropriate, according to the intern’s interest. These may include ad hoc support to and assisting in drafting meeting summaries on relevant intergovernmental and/or interagency meetings.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Currently enrolled in an academic programme in international relations, social sciences, public administration, or a related field, with a strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Enrollment in a graduate school programme or advanced degree is a plus.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

Insurance: UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to starting his/her work.

Visa requirements

If the intern is working remotely from a different country, there is no visa requirement.

If the intern is working remotely within the US, the intern is required to be on a G-4 visa if they do not hold one of the following statuses:

  • F1 visa holders who also have a (Curricular Practical Training) CPT;
  • US permanent residents (green card holders); or,
  • US Citizens

Individuals are personally responsible for obtaining any required visa, covering the entire period of their internship. If necessary, UNICEF will support the process by providing relevant documents such as the proof of internship.
