Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Media and Public Positioning Section, External Outreach Service of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Media Section.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Public Information Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensures audiovisual news coverage of priority issues and/or major events, including by drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
  • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses.
  • Coordinates with audio-visual units in the Department of Global Communications, the UN Information Service in Geneva and across the UN system to deliver video news coverage.
  • Writes the content of video scripts for news and features; shoots and edits high quality, fast-paced short news packages for use in multimedia digital platforms and social media; and identifies photos for distribution and use on the website or digital platforms.
  • Oversees the targeted distribution of video materials; ensures the good management of the film/video archives, and the proper safekeeping/preservation of historical visual materials; works closely with in-house IT services and engineers for problem solving, as well as ongoing improvement efforts;
  • Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of action plan, initiating proactive media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
  • Produces or oversees production of broadcast audio visual communications products to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy.
  • Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies
  • Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, supporting administrative processes, etc.

Ability to speak in public and make presentations, including the ability to convey through audiovisual materials key messages of the OHCHR. Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, public relations, communications or related area is required.

Experience in filming and editing high quality video production is required.

Experience in a multilingual international news environment is required.

Experience in the development of metrics evaluation reports to measure audience reach is desirable.

Experience in the UN common system or a similar international organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
