Result of Service

UNDRR’s priority web content is kept accurate, accessible and up to date throughout the contract period. PreventionWeb receives consistent maintenance and quality assurance; World Tsunami Awareness Day content is published and maintained across the tsunami website and relevant UNDRR platforms; the tsunami scenario in the STOP DISASTERS game is supported by clear, current and accessible web content; and outstanding issues, workflows and recommendations are documented for follow-up.

Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary- General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 120 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This six-month individual contractor assignment will support the quality, accessibility and day-to-day maintenance of UNDRR’s public web content. The contractor will help keep PreventionWeb and related UNDRR web properties accurate, current and effective, while providing dedicated digital content support for World Tsunami Awareness Day, including the tsunami campaign website and the tsunami scenario in the STOP DISASTERS game. Under the supervision of UNDRR’s Website Officer, the contractor will provide web publishing, quality assurance and content-maintenance support across UNDRR’s digital platforms. The contractor will: Create, update, review and publish web content across PreventionWeb and other UNDRR websites, applying agreed editorial, metadata and quality standards Maintain priority PreventionWeb pages and knowledge content by correcting outdated information, broken links, formatting problems, missing metadata and other public-facing issues Support World Tsunami Awareness Day before, during and after 5 November, including page building, updates and quality assurance for the tsunami campaign website and related content on UNDRR.org and PreventionWeb Maintain and improve web content supporting the tsunami scenario in the STOP DISASTERS game, including instructions, supporting resources, campaign links and localized content supplied by partners Improve the accessibility of webpages and digital content through practical checks and remediation, including headings, link text, image descriptions, tables, plain language and keyboard-friendly content structure Conduct content quality assurance across browsers and devices, identify display or usability issues, and coordinate fixes with editorial and technical colleagues Support consistent tagging, taxonomy, metadata and asset management in Drupal 10 and contribute to structured-content improvements where required Document recurring workflows, maintain issue logs, provide first-line guidance to content owners, and prepare clear handover notes Individual contractor will be home based and must be available during core UNDRR working hours (Geneva/Bonn time) A stable internet connection and availability via Microsoft Teams is essential.

Qualifications/special skills

A first-level university degree in social sciences, communications or other relevant field is required. At least 2 years of experience in web communications, digital content management or a related field is required. Experience using Drupal 10, WordPress or a similar content management system is required. Experience creating, reviewing and maintaining accessible web content is desirable. Experience with web quality assurance, metadata, taxonomy, link checking or digital asset management is desirable. Knowledge of disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation or sustainable development is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required.
